i’m trying to create a 3d modular snap/grid system for a spell-construction portion of a game. notably i have gotten some portions working but my hand-contructed work is having serious problems with correct snapping, as well as rotating, and selecting for move or remove.
does anyone know of a godot asset in the Asset Library or elsewhere that might do this behaviour more easily?
while this looks OK, it doesn’t seem to have the other major functionality the system needs; snapping.
for each new added item, it has a lighter-shade cube that needs to be put on/in a node sphere for the placement to function. also, if you remove a block, any blocks only connected to the center through the removed block need to move with it.
…bruh. i’m asking on the forums because i don’t WANT to make this from scratch, and want to see if anyone has a module/plugin already made that fits this use case.
You probably won’t find a plugin for something that specific. Besides, you haven’t described the wanted snapping functionality clearly enough. In any case, something like this shouldn’t be too hard to implement. Do a 2d prototype and then transpose to 3d, brawh.
well there’s a lot of problems that are faced in 3d not 2d.
1: 3-dimensional snapping nuance(how can the editor tell if i’m focusing on the nearer sphere in overlap or the farther?
2: 3-dimensional click pick(in 2d, its pretty easy to tell which box a click is on, bc a 2d screen and 2d map are easily aligned. in 3d though, its harder and more nuanced and i;ve tried ray-casting to no success)
3: rotation: in 2d, you have exactly 2 rotation directions. in 3d, you have 6.
4: overlap: likewise, its easier to tell in 2d when a potential new sector overlaps existing ones.
