Anthropic AI funding Blender

Interesting. Anthropic AI funding Blender a model making open source application. Think they will fund Godot?

Better question: Will the Godot Foundation want their money?

I don’t have a problem if it pays for a full time programmer or doc writer, with no strings attached regarding using LLM assisted methodology : get their money before it vanishes when the bubble MOABs…

This possibility is more political than practical.

Practically, more money is more money. However, it doesn’t raise questions of the Godot Foundation’s ethics, Anthropic’s motives, and what it could mean for the future.

So, I don’t think this’ll happen.

Ha! That was a new term for me.

It stands for the ā€œMother of All Bombsā€. It’s a big thing in Bloons TD.

Also in real-life too.

Or Massive Ordinance Air Blast. Which is the real military acronym for it. And the one I was referring to

Or ā€œMother of All Bloonsā€.

I doubt they’d just hand out money without at least a tiny miny string attached.

MS did it as far as their patronage of the Godot foundation goes, iirc : free to spend the money on whatever, not . NET integration or anything of the sort

Yeah, could be just for image. Anthropic loves to burn money on PR. 240k is a drop for them. At least at the moment.

I’m a little bit concerned, but conflicted.
If Anthopic is just supporting Blender with a Patron found, I’m ok with it. Since A. trained their Model on the Blender Source (and all the tools around Blender), it’s ok that they pay for this.
But I’m afraid, that the money is ā€œpayedā€ in tokens to spend them on ā€œMythosā€. As they offered many OSS projects this, to find bugs in the software.
I don’t know, have to read more about it.

If they pay ā€œin tokensā€ that’d count as plenty of strings attached. I doubt that’s the case though. It’d result in outrage.

250k a year maybe chump change for Anthropic but not for Godot nor Blender. Anthropic will probably use the Source Code, docs and other assets to train on, without worrying about nasty pushback like when Amazon used mysql and postgresql source code to make their own db and to profit immensely.
It’s also good PR.

I prefer Anthropic over OpenAi and I hope they do more investments with regards to open source.

There is a lot of backlash to this decision.

On Youtube most of the responses are about the Claude limits.

Take by Bart on blendernation:

On Mastodon most of the reactions are negative.

As a long time Blender user, I find this news disappointing. Not necessarily because there’s the potential for LLM stuff to land in Blender. That remains to be seen, and I won’t jump to conclusions. I just find the whole notion antithetical to a FOSS program aimed at artists.

To be clear, I’m not fanatically anti-LLM. It IS cool tech. I’m not pro-LLM either. The environmental concerns are real, and the breakneck speed at which we are allowing these companies to embed themselves into every facet of society, without any sort of checks and balances is just irresponsible and dangerous.

As someone who contributed some of his disposable income to make Blender open source 20+ years ago, I fully understand the need for further and continuous fund raising.

That said, as I mentioned above, this needs to be with no strings attached, and some details I’ve learnt since then worry me. Particularly the integration of Blender into their LLM toolchain…

Worries me what the Blender foundation leadership are thinking…

Yeah that’s a concern as well. Years ago, their thinking was more, ā€œYeah, you select with the right mouse button. Deal with it, because we have our own methodology.ā€
But news like this makes you wonder if profit is more on their minds. That’s not a bad thing in itself, but how are they willing to bend to get there?

…Well I guess I’m willing to speculate after all, sue me. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Crawling the web and stealing from artists and coders all around the world. Now paying some pocket money for the artist’s tool. Shame on Blender for taking their money.
