A good start is https://gameprogrammingpatterns.com/
It’s available for free online and you can buy it as book.
Game design is so broad, do you think of level design, story telling or game art?

EDIT:
IMHO there is no way to teach “game design”, learn from other games, and from other art forms, interest in architecture etc.
On the art side, I think you can learn a lot from the classics like Walt Disney. I love “Illusion Of Life, The: Disney Animation”.

The books I’ve read on the subject are already 10-20 years old, so I can’t really recommend them, given that so many new works have come out. However I will say that learning game design is like learning any other art, be it drawing, music, dance, anything. Very useful!

Take music - anyone can listen to music and enjoy it, but by understanding music theory, you develop understanding of why certain harmonies work in certain ways. It’s the same with game theory - you learn to recognize patterns effortlessly, like why a positive feedback loop works in some cases, but doesn’t in others. Games are hugely complex (not just game mechanics but art, soundtrack, story, characters, and much more), but they can be broken down into manageable fragments that can be understood and played with. In the music metaphor, anyone can put notes after each other, but it takes understanding to know what order to put them in, to create something that “works”.

In short - I definitely recommend reading about game design theory. You’ll quickly start noticing things about games you like, or don’t like, that you’d never thought about before. I’m sure it’s the same in your art - just think about all the things you see in a 3D model today, that you were oblivious to some number of years ago

There you go: Amazon.com: Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Game Design: 9781394298761: Rogers, Scott: Books . This is a great book!

Good books (older, none of that 22 days for aholes crap) on cinematography, scenario writing, old fashioned design and for me, one of the most influential was a book on old school tabletop wargames design, which was really enlightening on system designs a few decades ago. It’s even got chapters on computer wargames, PDF available on archive.org and other places.
