Benefit of TileMap for a hex board game?

Hey, first post here. Just starting to tinker with Godot. I have coding experience but not in games.
I’m planning to build a 2d hex based board game. From reading the docs and from internet search, I found that its possible to use the TileMap node. One thing that I couldn’t figure out is what is the benefit of using it, as opposed to creating my own hex nodes with hex sprites and script, and managing them through my own hexMap node.
