BULOKI, a game combining the controls of Bloxorz with the tension of Pac-Man

Hi eveyone,

I’m happy to share my first commercial game made with Godot!

Buloki has been abducted by aliens! Master grid-based movement, don’t fall, avoid traps and patrolling aliens, and find your way out of the ship.

After struggling with several projects that ended up being too ambitious and not very fun, I decided to make something simpler that was fun from the very beginning. Since I love the simple yet challenging movement of Bloxorz, I wanted to push that core mechanic even further. So I combined it with the collectibles and ghost-chasing tension of Pac-Man, then added new mechanics such as doors, elevators, lasers, turrets, and even boss fights.

Sadly, I can’t share screenshots or GIFs yet, but you can watch the trailer here:

And you can check the itch.io page

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to check it out!

Thanks

Wow, great work. Looks like by redirecting your focus to a “simpler” game you were really able to focus on the different elements. The gameplay, visuals, audio, all look quite accomplished. Cute characters too  Congratulations on your release!

Some thoughts on improvement:

  • You should consider a demo so people can try the game out. $4.99 isn’t crazy high, but I think it’s enough for people to want to know what they’re buying.

  • See if you can release on multiple platforms. Bonus points for a demo playable in browser.

  • I think on your itch.io page you should mention details such as how many levels, game modes, general gameplay time, etc. etc. that could give potential buyers more incentive to make the purchase.

Wow, that’s awesome you were able to turn it around so quickly. Will give it a shot when I get a chance.

The level restarting upon death is overly punitive, especially in the first 30 seconds. I found myself confused on how to align the character, and I was afraid to experiment because of how much progress was at stake.

Look great! I love the level of polish!

I loved to play bloxorz back in the game.
This really seems like a nice evolution of that game with lots of new content and mechanics.
Like I don’t remember enemies that would chase me in bloxorz.

I am considering to buy the game soon.
Well done! :four_leaf_clover:

I played the web demo a bit and really enjoyed it.

I want to point out some of my experience I had, maybe it helps you improve the game a bit.

  • I wondered why the game did not start with some story. The trailer video showed me some story, but it was lacking in the demo. I think if there is any story in the main game, the first level in the demo should not start without introducing the story also.
  • I wondered what the two sides of the player character were for, the green one and the yellow one. I also noticed pressure plates or buttons on the ground have the same symbol. This makes me wonder if there is a relation between the both, but the first level does not need me to land perfectly on the buttons. That’s a bit distracting at first. (In level 2 then I know there is also colored buttons, but the association through the symbol remains, even tho I can just trigger the button without the parts of the player body which carry the symbol).

  • It would be nice to see how many steps my solutions took. So that players which put in extra effort can find minimal solutions.
    • Or even an optional timed version would be nice, for speed runs. But for sure this option should be optional, because not every player enjoys the pressure which this builds up. I for example love it as casual as possible.
  • Sometimes the web version had some hickups or stutters where it just froze mid game.
  • As @ComicallyUnfunny mentioned some checkpoints would be lovely, especially in the early stages of the game.
  • When reaching the end-of-level point, the finishing animation could show a bit more stuff. Fade out or any other slightly rewarding animation.
  • Since there is a mechanic of counting coins. Maybe some of them could be crucial to complete each level. Others could be optional for when one wants additional puzzles.

At this point (image below) I would have loved a checkpoint in order to know my clumsy attempts would be forgiven. Also, sometimes I just slip down mid-game, because I hit a few keys to fast.

Overall there is a few things that can be added in order to make the game more interesting for a wider audience range.

Really nice commercial game! :four_leaf_clover:

I played a bit and I love the art style, and it made me think which I like.

The only qualm I had was that you couldn’t respawn at a certain point, so a checkpoint every now and then would be nice.
