Сan godot become paid or will it become?
Godot is not like Unity, it will stay free.
The exact quote and philosophy is written as such:
Godot is completely free and open source under the very permissive MIT license. No strings attached, no royalties, nothing. The users’ games are theirs, down to the last line of engine code. Godot’s development is fully independent and community-driven, empowering users to help shape their engine to match their expectations. It is supported by the Godot Foundation not-for-profit.
This is currently the philosophy of the main Godot developers, but they could decide to change it. Legally, the MIT license allows making it closed-source. There are also payment models for open source software.
However, I agree that this is unlikely. And the last open source version will always be available, so the community can keep working on it themselves.
What part of the MIT license says you can make it closed source?
You know Unreal Engine is Open Source and is not free?
the source you make with MIT can be made close source that’s the good of permissive licence. however the source that is already in the wild is forever in the wild and always being added to. as seen with audacity the moment a bad actor tries to take over a permissive licence, a fork happens and every one simply moves to the source. worst case the website URL and “the trust fund” is lost not the project or code.
