Class action lawsuit against game addiction, what do you think?

What do you think about the class action lawsuit that is taking place to sue companies like Nintendo, Xbox, Playstation because their games are, ‘addictive’? There has already been settlements planned and made!

What do you think is going to happen? New laws put into place saying that a video game cannot be addictive.

This could be the end of indie game developement, and also AAA+

No.

I think you missed the main point of the lawsuit.
These lawsuits target large corporations and specifically their monetization aspect. The lawsuit, as far as I can tell, isn’t specifically that the games are addictive or “too fun”, but rather the fact that they’re addictive AND encourage the players, especially a younger audience, to spend more and more money on those games. The smoking gun they have is the fact that these companies FILL their games with microtransactions and lootboxes.

They have been doing that bull for so many years. Well if that is what’s its about, I don’t care then.

The AAA game industry will probably punish everyone with whatever change they make. Such as subscription based only, at $50.00 a month min.

Good luck with that.

Video games by their very nature are addictive, just like chocolate, I dont see anyone banning that.

As others have said its about the ‘gambling’ aspect of it , loot boxes etc. And yeah this has been happening since video games started. (look at arcade games)

I thought it was more about gambling too. Peddling gambling systems to younger children. We know how gambling can be a problem for many adults and laws and new taxes were introduced to protect gamblers from abuse of addictions. But the same gambling mechanics that make addicts out of adults are now being applied to games aimed at children, and circumventing the protections and laws around gambling. This case is important and will help the games industry in the long run.
