Is it possible to combine 2d and 3d, let me explain, to have depth for the landscape but have the character move on a single line.
I have an example of a game that unfortunately doesn’t seem to be coming out any time soon, but that’s what I’m trying to do:

Yeah, all you need to do is have separation of data and visualization. Your player object moves in a 2D world, but you represent it as a 3D world. Games have done that since Doom. For example, early 3D MMOs used a naive 2D top-down map, represented in 3D. That’swhy they couldn’t have bridges or caves without blocking movement or scene transitions. There’s nothing fancy to it, just think about how the player moves and separate that from what the player looks like.
