Developers time - how much is value of it?

This topic is purely for “get idea” purposes, I don’t propose any employment or financial compensation.

As seeing occasionally offers someone looking for some developer into team or make game for game, how much do you value your time and what can someone expect in those hours done?

I know this will be depended on geological location of developer as well as different cost of living etc.

So example project would be :

Mobile game with ads, main theme is typical gather resources farm/clicking to upgrade and keep leveling, offering perks to buy.( coins, diamonds, levels)

Let say someone expect to be done this game within half year, typical pay be for 40 hours a week, and once a month have 1 hour paid progress review.

What would you expect to receive per month as reward for your work? ( artist be separate topic, but assets are made already, might need adaptation)

I’m not sure what you’re asking, but usually how job classifieds work is that the company includes a set of expectations in their listing (e.g. required years of experience, relevant education, et cetera), along with a job title that you can glean responsibilities from. (A junior developer is typically not expected to have the same problems on their plate as a senior.)

Competent companies also include a salary range in their listing, making it easy to see at a glance whether a job is worth applying to or not. Incompetent companies do not list a range, but instead list their offered wage as ‘competitive’ or some other equally meaningless term.

If your question literally is “hey Tokyo Funk Scene, what’s the lowest salary you’ll work for and how many story points can you burn in a sprint?” the answer is: “I have no aspiration of working in the industry, because as I understand it professional gamedev is less of a career and more of a Kafkaesque exercise in masochism and humiliation.”

Good point, it’s more forum only addressing hypothetical questions not real situation.

So we can safely assume, to be paid we need to have expertise and skills which are needed in team.

If someone would want one person hire to make whole game, it’s very unrealistic then?

Lol.

Yes, that would probably be a bad idea, and expensive.

It sounds like you are considering a budget to get a game built where you are acting more like the game director rather than the developer. This is certainly do-able. However you should be looking to do many freelance projects with many freelancers. I think in this situation I would start with some concept art. You sketch out some concepts, however badly, giving the basic vision and pay a freelancing artist to tidy produce artistic concept drawings for you. If you like them great, if not, you give them and your original doodles and your comments about the first batch to another freelancing artist, and go for draft two. Or you give your original doodles to 3 freelancers and pick the best result. You go around in circles until you finally have some concept art you are proud of.

Then you start with the game. Same again, get a bare bones game made from a freelancer. Give it a couple of rounds of improvements before handing it all to another freelancer etc. While that is going on you start with other artists producing characters for your concept art. Perhaps animators to move them etc. Slowly your game comes together and you will have done it with a team of 20 or 30 people, musicians, artists, developers, animators etc.

Go on Fiverr and get some idea of pricing for each thing. Small, single purpose projects for every stage. Definitely not one person does it all. You may as well just burn your money. At least this way you can start off small. I am guessing you could get concept art pretty close to your vision quite cheaply. Make sure you refuse anything AI generated. You need to hire experienced people for each stage that are talented at what they do.

Sounds like a good plan!

As for how much, take logo design for instance. On Fiverr anything from £10 to £500 and even more. It just depends on what you are expecting and the quality you will accept.

I see there is whole lot of people offering Full game creation.

The pricing is wide, what you think be realistic expectations from such as services?

No idea what to expect from someone charging 61 GBP to create your game.probably they have a few ready made scenes and just switch the sprites around and make some minor adaptations to tailor it to your needs.

Absolutely not. That is a nice ideal. The reality is to be paid, you only need to convince someone to pay you. Sometimes that is about demonstrating your skill at doing the thing they want you to do–all too often it involves many other things.

I once hired someone from Fiverr to fix a rigging issue in Blender. The person who ‘helped’ me was incompetent and quite possibly illiterate. Maybe you have found the one petunia growing in a garbage patch, but I hesitate to use that web site for anything ever again for good reason.

If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is

Yeah, but often the content of video doesn’t show all.

Yeah, I think that site in particular has had its day tbh. There are others but I don’t know how they are faring either in the age of AI slop, and YT tutorials telling everyone they can earn money with AI pretending to do things they really can’t.

A web search says that the average pay for programmers in the USA is about $35 per hour.

However, finding a competent programmer is really difficult if you are not a competent programmer yourself. Even big businesses often have incompetent programmers in senior positions. It’s not just a question of paying enough. It’s a question of recognizing if a given programmer is competent or not.

The Valve have unique way for it. Their work is evaluated by other workers and they pay is based on performance from shared income.

Maybe it’s reason why we don’t see cheap slopped Half Life 3.

Like if someone know how to solve problems, it definitely can be worth it or even more. But be honest when hiring someone for do specific part of game it should come with som estimate how long it should take.

Which in most of forum member is not case.
