I would like to suggest a new category for dev_logs. I have been aware of the current showcase being dominated by dev logs, which is fine, but not really a ‘showcase’.
I think the showcase category should be focussed on projects that are either completed, playable, or for polished elements that people might want to share (or show off!).
A separate category for work-in-progress dev-logs would also help encourage people to start them, and for people to follow dev logs they are interested in. It would also then keep the showcase clear. This way, it will be easier to find and recognise the showcased finished or standout content.
I like dev-logs, I know that some people find them useful to keep their work on track and stay motivated, get feedback and ideas or develop ideas. But I also like looking at the showcases for an entirely different reason. I like seeing peoples creations and playing their games and seeing new releases. But it seems to me these are two very different things.
So I would suggest a new category of Dev-Logs for now, and move the dev-logs over to that category from the showcase.
The Showcase category has three subcategories: Games, Applications, and In Development. The last one already seems ideal for what you’re suggesting. The description already reads: Do you have any work-in-progress? Share what you are currently creating in this category!
It doesn’t really seem necessary to create another one.
But,we can’t use it to upload dev logs very regularly, the forum also doesn’t like to see one single post on the top everyday(even I wouldn’t like to see my help post being buried under a guy’s post who is just yapping about his game.
The main problem is we should have a Tab/Area whatever you say that is separate from the main forum, only used to showcase games made in Godot.
Oh I’m not against it, just trying to figure out how it would be different from the already existing category. If I want to present something I’m working on, it’s already a “dev log” of sorts.
If the Games subcategory is for releases/demos, and the In Progress category is for showcasing what you are working on, having another Dev Log section would mean someone would post in which category, when?
the devlog section can be for only the dev logs, well we also don’t have any problems rn,but I think other peoples might find it odd to see every type of posts in the main section,
would be great for a place that is 100% for only devlogs and doesn’t bury your help post : D
Of course I, too, would like the forum to turn into phpBB. After all, the best internet was the internet of the 2000s, lol.
But yeah, I think it’s just a matter of getting used to how it works. I don’t dislike Disqus. I think the forum is fine the way it is.
This is how every modern social media website works. You have a feed of everything going on, and you can sort that using various methods (more or less). It’s kind of the default modus operandi of the internet right now (and been so for some time), so most users are probably familiar with this way of displaying posts.
I was here for a few years before I even discovered (the hard way) that there was sub categories (and not just tags).
I agree it would be a good idea for dev logs to have their own separate space. I think it might even encourage more of them.
Yeah, this is why I thought it was a good idea. It was not meant as a negative thing about ‘leave the showcase alone’, more about dev_logs are an imprtant thing themselves.
Great engagement and usage on the forum can only be good for Godot, and many people find value in doing them. So why not explicitly encourage users to log their game dev journeys? If someone posts once a month for two years and you can read the whole journey from day 1 to released game, including all the hurdles, that is great content and a valuable resource for people just starting out.
I still think it should be it’s own category! I get it is a sub category, and I missed even the existence of sub categories too entirely. But I think this was a fair suggestion that hopefully will be considered by the powers that be!
As for now, I have marked as a solution the post about sub categories from @zigg3c, as it is a solution that already exists of sorts. But personally I would still like them to be promoted from a sub_category to a main category.
