Editor freezing when stopping the game with F8 in Mobile and Forward renderers

Godot Version

4.7.2

Question

Hey folks,

So recently I stumbled upon this issue, can’t pinpoint when it started happening.

Stopping game using F8 key (after a short delay) causes the editor and all GPU-accelerated apps (such as Chromium web browser) to freeze for several seconds - even on an empty project (with just a single empty scene - 100% reproduction).

This doesn’t happen only on Compatibility renderer. I even reinstalled Windows, with all the drivers - this is not going away. I think this wasn’t an issue earlier - as I remember Godot being lighting fast (never locking up) when I was doing all the tutorials in Mobile/Forward+ and constantly stopping and restarting the game (using F5/F8 hotkeys) - never using Compatibility mode. It’s the same for Vulkan, as well as DX12.

I came up with a simple workaround/realisation - I made F9 key call get_tree().quit() - which prevents the freeze from occurring, taking exact same length of time to shut down the game.

So using F8 hotkey forces the game to shut down in a way that causes the freeze.

I’m on a freshly installed and updated Windows 11/ RX 5700XT. Rolling back to older drivers didn’t help either.

Is that a bug or something completely normal/expected? Or perhaps an issue with the old graphic card?

Are you able to create a MRP which behaves the same on another machine? If you have access to another machine that is.
