Ok im fed up by so many people saying godot is still a weak engine and especially the people saying stuff against the community, hell to this topic im fed up with AI.
I have an Idea, I remember the topic about what skilled forum memberss could make but there were issues with that. So what abou some kind of free to participate forum wide pass the game project where we try to get as many forum members to help as possible. Wont be an insane game but could be funny.
How do you see that being done?
Iâd be happy to participate in general, as long as it doesnât require too much commitment.
Describe a rough framework and we can go from there
yeah this Idea works cause no one has to commit too much. Each person could have the game for a couple of days and then just go back to how things were.
It heavily depends on how many people would join in. If its like 5 ppl then its a cool little project that can be organised easily. If its a ton of people then it gets harder.
You could first have a brainstorm session with whoever wants to participate, then have features or small slices as tickets people can pick up. This could prevent people working on the same thing individually and give some sort of structure while not losing the spirit.
Well itâs mainly about making something cool. Hut so often people say the engine still isnât that good and I point to a game like Slay the Spire 2 and they say that any engine can be good with a good Dev team or something along the lines of that. So I wanted to just put together a ton if yes talented Devs but also random people on the internet. It definitely would be fun. Cause the way this is done isnât wasting anyoneâs time is it?
From technical standpoint, Slay the Spire is a very simple game. Could be made in much weaker engines than Godot. Not saying that Godot is weak.
As for your idea @HyperJragon, full horizontality is not an ideal collaboration model for making games. There needs to be some hierarchy. Unless this is just for pure unrestrained fun and nobody minds the chaos this will likely ensue.
But if youâre pumped, start doing it small and let the people join in.
I suspect those people either never made any game before, or only work for large triple A studios and know nothing but a custom fork of Unreal engine specific made for their studio.
I think something like a forum-wide game jam would yield better results than a single project, if for no other reason than multiple different projects would both interest more people and make for more reasonably sized teams. Who gets to decide if weâre making a racing game, an RPG, or a metroidvania? Is it 3D or 2D? There are quite a few genres out there I wouldnât care about contributing towards and about as many that I would. I guess you could try making a game that dramatically changes every level, but at that point youâve come full circle to doing a game jam, just an awkward one.
Years ago, I was heavily invested in the community for the PS4 game Dreams before its demise. It was very surprising to see, and be involved in, so many projects that were made by complete amateurs (Iâm talking people that would make any amateur here look like a professional). My point being that if you keep your scope realistic and youâre thoughtful about how you build out a team and delegate tasks, then sure. I donât see how it wouldnât be doable. But as to whether or not it would be a strong showcase of what Godot can do compared to any of the professionally developed offerings using Godot.. I would say a better line of reasoning would be to do it just for fun, not to prove anything. Then let the chips fall where they will.
Something like this? Link is of a video in which five developers collaboratively make a game without ever communicating (other than on deciding a theme.) Dev 1 works on the game for two (?) hours, then passes on the project down the chain to the next dev, until everyone has had a go.
Apparently, thereâs a whole series of videos like this.
Godot is the greatest engine i have used so far,
I have no idea anyone would say its âweakâ, as far as i am concerned, it is intuitively designed, easy to learn, powerful in 2D AND 3D engine modes, free, opensource (unlike Unity, etc.), the community is great, and i could probably continue on for a long time.
***Apologies, i dont know why i always miss topics like this for several days before seeing them, and yes i got pretty worked up at that first part hehhh. And yes, I am also sick of AI
As for the forumwide game idea, it sounds cool, but there are certainly quite a bit of things to be addressed to do such, and i also know several of us dont have enough time due to careers, personal projects, life in general, etc.
Not saying its a bad idea, and if i wasnt held up on time and whatnot, i would enjoy contributing
I love the old-fashioned chain-letter idea, like finishing each-otherâs stories around a campfire kind of thing.
So hereâs the deal.
My projects never go anywhere. Like many of you, I have work and family commitments. Also, I end up building plugins in stead of games every time I run into something that tells me âthis should be easier to doâ.
So all my stranded games are open source on codeberg, but theyâre of course not the âsee, you can do AAA whatever with Godot whatever qualityâ and they suffer from un-thought-out architecture.
Also, Iâm not so creative when it comes to game mechanics, so theyâre more remakes of games I used to play.
But an entire forum could definitely level one of these up.
So! Would anyone like to receive one of these proverbial âlettersâ for say 5 weeks and then hand over to the next one?:
Tatra
â Tetris but you have a humonculus that also jumps around between the blocks
â play online - sorry, big download, forgot to minimize the build
â Auto-scaling mobile controls for phones
â Videos about making tatra
Goblins vs. Fishfolk
â Tower defense, convert trees into arrow-, cannon- and seagull-towers (just like Pixel Junkâs Monsters 2)
â Local co-op multiplayer with up to 4 controllers and one mouse+keyboard
â my first - and only 3D game, riddled with 3D art bad practices and only works nicely with 4.3
â web demo
â windows executable built on vulkan (this is the full game. Try endless mode, in which I put the most time and effort)
Muralla
â Yet another start of a Zeliard remake
â Only has the cavern of Malicia and a small bit of Peligro, without the boss and without shops,
â TIlemapLayers are drawn entirely using my ez tiles plugin
â People said I should cease and desist before I got sued or whatever, so I deleted half of my online presence (including my itch account), because I have a family to support and am fâing scared of American lawfare. Still, if you change the shape of the cavern and use other names assets itâs probably fineâŚ
â play it online; again, sorry about the unminimized build
Moon
â Made with my sonâs hollow knight/bug fables style fan art
â He drew the map himself using my ez tiles plugin
â play online, unminimized again
