Has anyone ever actually gotten a virus from a tutorial?

Hello!!

You see, once upon a time, I was really obsessed with anything to do with computer viruses and how they worked. You know, the stuff KinitoPet is inspired by! I really did love seeing what they did, I found a lot of my favorite Youtubers through them testing viruses, but it also made me extremely paranoid with anything, ever, going on with links or any website that I havent visited before.

So now, im following a tutorial on how to do something (bad, i know), and as im typing in the code, I get very paranoid that im going to type in a virus that, when I run the game, destroys my computer or something. Has anyone ever actually gotten a virus from typing in code from tutorials in gdscript?

No.

It’s not something to worry about. You’d have to create something that connected to the Internet. Tutorials are 100% safe.

It’s technically possible, but that would be one of the stupidest ways to distribute any kind of malware or virus.

Not only it would be horribly inefficient, but it would likely be taken down very quickly, since most people who do coding, even if they’re starting out, will immediately realize you’re writing code that will pull something off the internet and possibly execute it.

So technically possible but in reality you will never, ever come across this, especially if you’re watching YouTube tutorials with over 10k views.

Also most scammers prefer ways that require the least amount of effort possible. Making an entire video / writing an entire tutorial is a LOT of effort for little to no return in time and knowledge investment.

Oh and PS: Destroying someone’s PC is absolutely useless for a scammer. They don’t want to destroy your PC, they want to either take your login tokens, money, or install some kind of backdoor instead, but destroying random people’s PC will not get them anything.

Re-typing blindly from a tutorial without understanding what it does is not a good idea in any case, although likelihood that it will somehow constitute a “virus” is pretty much zero.
