How long making game takes in reality compared to expectation?

yk, my problem is opposite - i need to make game for as long as possible, cuz i can’t release it due to non-game dev reasons for next year, tho game jams are good idea for learning, thx for that too

I don’t know what could make you unable to publish a game for a whole year, but if you’re stuck with a non-compete or something of that nature, you should check your local laws surrounding that. It’s rare those are legally binding, and rarer that they’re worth litigating.

it’s not a year really, more like few months, it’s due to paper work and stuff + lack of time and possibility to do it, ik that for sure i’ll be able to do it in a year, that’s why i have this entire problem

It depends on the level of polish you want and your expectations. Production-level polish takes most of the time.

I would say a small, polished game usually takes around 12 months, even if it has minimal technical requirements. You can always release faster, but it usually comes at the cost of polish, and that creates greater market risk.

A general rule of thumb is to double the amount of time you expect. If you think it will take 3–4 months, assume it will actually take around 8 months.
