How to have z coordinate(height) in a 2D topdown game?

Question

In 2D game, you only have x(length) and y(width) coordinates, where x and y is used for horizontal, and vertical movement respectively, but I also want to have z(height) coordinate in the game for terrain, combat, movement, etc… , what’s your opinion?
