Idea for a brightness setting in godot

I have had an idea for changing the brightness in godot games, would it be possible to create a kind of brightness setting in which you use a ColorRect and you make a setting based script which controls its opacity, also make it black in colour. Has this worked before?

Why not use environment tone mapping?
