Introduction – Builder Exploring the World of Godot

Hello everyone! My name is Leyla Holland, and I’m a builder with a deep interest in design, structure, and creative problem-solving. Although my background is in construction, I’ve recently become fascinated by digital creation and the possibilities that tools like Godot Engine offer.

I’m here to learn more about how game design and simulation can connect with real-world building concepts from visualizing projects to exploring interactive design ideas. I’m excited to see how I can use Godot for creative visualization, learning, or even fun side projects.

I’m looking forward to connecting with others in this community, learning from your experiences, and sharing a bit of my own background in building and project planning. Thanks for having me here, and I can’t wait to start exploring and contributing!

As a builder, you might be interested in this free program. I use it to create apartments and buildings and import them into Godot.

I believe your architect friends might have recommendations on existing solutions.
At the start of the century, we called that kind of professional or military simulations/visualizations built with game engines, serious games.
It’s grown into multiple specialized industries all using game tech as stepping stones to simulations that were unthinkable a few years before, and now is serving as base to build XR versions of those tools.
Have fun on your game tech journey,
Cheers!

Welcome. I’d recommend that you start with the 2D and 3D tutorials. While they are just making simple games, they will introduce you to navigating and using the Godot Editor. They each should take an hour or two to complete.

Once you understand how to move about the engine, you will probably have more ideas about what you might like to try doing, and what is possible. You will also have a new Godot vocabulary that will help you ask more detailed questions here.

For resources for building, you can check out free 3D assets on itch.io. I would also recommend looking into the GridMap Node. I think you will find it helpful for creating 3D visualizations.

A few questions for you:

  1. Do you have any specific projects in mind that you’d like to investigate?
  2. Do you envision something where you’re framing out walls with 2x4s or something more like The Sims?
  3. Do you want to use Godot as a visualization tool, or do you want to create programs/apps for other people to use?
  4. Have you thought about what devices you’re targeting? Desktop? Mobile? Tablets? VR? AR?
