Introduction - New to GODOT

Hello everyone. Brand new to GODOT and gdscript. Learning as much as possible with the time I have. Working on a turn based RPG project. Feel free to ask me about it. The ultimate plan is to release the game alongisde a full length novel I am also writing to go with the game. It is going to be a long road. If I can help with anyone’s story, I could equally use help with coding and pixel art. Looking forward to it!

Hi :waving_hand: and welcome to the forum.
You’ll find a lot of knowledge and knowledgable people to learn from here.

What made you pick a turn based RPG as your first game?

Thanks for the reply. Already working through learning GDScript, creating pixel art, and using the various features on GoDot. Very overwhelming.

RPGs have always been my favorite. Since Ultima onljne and Zelda to Expedition 33 and FF7 Rebirth. As someone fond of story and writing, I always enjoy the immersion of a good story and building a set of characters that develop over time.

With this current project I am envisioning graphics on par with SNES’s Chrono Trigger or Bahamut Lagoon. A story set in modern times about a group of kids who discover a haunted house on Halloween and learn about a more complex and deep plot surrounding supernatural forces. Thanks to their spirit guides, they gain powers to clear haunted locations (dungeons) and help the people and spirits in the overworld.

This game is being coupled with a novel I am writing along side the game.

Thinking a blend of cliches from inspirations like IT, Monster House, Eathbound, and various others.

Pretty daunting, but I am excited about it.

UO, now that’s pretty old school.

If you want to make your own graphics, check out https://www.aseprite.org/ Also, if you haven’t found it yet, take a look at itch.io There are a lot of free resources there. Sometimes having some temporary graphics to use can help you build your game.

Hi, Godot Forums are a great place to learn and Godot is my favorite game engine because of its great community and its simplicity. I think the idea of this game is cool.

I have found that the best way to learn godot for me at least is this,

My first game was a turn based game too! I thought it would be easier but it wasn’t.

My only advice would be to get the game manager and turn controls working first, including all the turn over, ‘who goes first’ controls in the game loop etc. Get them clean and well structured before filling the turns up with the rest of the game clutter. And start with a game menu too. (Very basic initially, just leave it grey and blank but with just the game name perhaps and a ‘start game’ button) so you can make sure your game manager is working well. It won’t take long and you will be glad you did. (I wish I had done this in my first game.)

Good luck, and have fun.
