Item select screen?

Making a 2D pixel art RPG, and would love to create an item select screen. Nothing too fancy, just a box that pops up, where acquired items would be displayed, and the player can move the cursor between them to select and then equip a chosen item.

I don’t have any existing code here, I’m really starting from scratch with how to create this component of my game. I know how to call up a display screen that will pause the game until a specific button is pushed, it’s mostly just the moving the cursor and selecting an item that confuses me.
