As i’m starting to add sounds to my game i want to know what are the things i need to look out for, for now i only apply noise normalization through audacity, but in order to make it consistent are there other modification i need to know?
You can try to normalize and set initial volumes for sound effects so nothing is wildly quieter or louder. Still I think you need to tweak playback volume for sound effects after hearing them in play. It’s difficult to know what will cut through the mix of background music and other effects going on. A good pair of headphones with decent bass response can be very helpful.
Creating separate audio buses for music & sound effects is helpful. Then, you can give the player separate options for the volume of those things. Test that your audio players are all assigned to the correct buses if you do.
It’s a good idea to setup audio bus for music and sfx separately too. You’ll assign those tracks to play on their respective bus and then you can easily add a slider for the bus so players can control volumes.
If the user’s health is of your concern (which it should be), you can apply a hard limiter to the master bus to eliminate sudden decibel peaks in the mix.
Place the audio effect at the end of your effect stack.
