Meet people and mentorship

I’m a software engineer and through my career my mindset has always been to work alone and take care of as may things i can on my own. However, since I started playing with godot over a year a go my minset has changed and now I feel an urge to connect with other people, learn from them and maybe even colaborate.

I’ve never been to social and my online presence is almost nonexistent so this really feels daunting and i constantly feel like a fool, but i live in a really small town and opportunities to share my passions with other people are 0, so this seemed like a good idea.

Soooo, is this a good place / way to start ?

Your in luck! This is THE best place to start and the forum’s got plenty of knowledgeable developers who are willing to help you in a heartbeat (if you ask specific questions, ask them properly, and follow forum etiquette). Welcome aboard!

Now, for clarification, I am not one of those developers. I personally lurk on here and answer when I’m able. But as I learn and do more, the range of questions I can answer will increase.

As for my experience, I started as a networking newbie. But then, I asked detailed questions, learned a lot of new info, and now I’m on my way to building the foundational netcode for my project.

I learned from a lot of people, but I have to give a special mention to @pennyloafers He’s really experienced with networking and software development in general. He is prime definition of a mentor, at least to me. And helped me learn a ton about Godot’s underlying multiplayer API, how to optimize and program functional code, and a lot more.

Someone more experienced on this forum will most likely reply to this post with more clarifying information. I’m just a first responder. :+1:

Cool, thanks a lot for answering, I really appreciate it.
I’ve always been a lurker too because it felt awkward to participate and although my english is good (I think), it is not my primary language, so it usually requires more effort on my part

Hi gviceteg, your situation is very similar to mine, I never socialized at all(both online and locally), as I’m living in a hostile environment, where there are 0 minds to share thought with.
But as now I’m exploring Godot, I feel the temptation to socialize with others.

I’m really sorry to hear that, but I’m also glad that we both took the step and tried to be more social. I’ve always had a “lonely” mindset towards software development but as I grew as a dev i noticed how flawed my mindset was. The best way to grow is to share with others and to let other people teach us.
I hope we both find our way towards this goal

I’ve also found the godot official discord to be a lively place for discussion, and the godot reddit as well. Even if you don’t post, you’ll learn a ton by lurking if you pay attention.

I haven’t checked out the official discord and i’ve lurked a bit on reddit. I am looking for connections, because i want to share my passion and because i think is the best way to get real feedback, contribute and keep growing, so the intention is to be active.

Game jams also feel like a good place to meet new people but It feels really difficult to find teams and to balance work / personal life with the jam
