Working Title: 2D Crime City
Engine: Godot 4.4.1
View: Top-down (bird’s-eye view)
Style: Pixel art, retro atmosphere
I’m developing a 2D open-world action game focused on missions, exploration, and vehicles. The player can walk around a large city map, enter various cars, complete scripted objectives, destroy targets through collisions, and collect items under time pressure.
The game is currently in an early stage of development. A few core mechanics and basic missions are already implemented, including driving, mission scripting, cutscenes, and collectible systems. Most features are still being prototyped and refined.
The idea of vehicles is interesting. But, personally in my opinion, the combination of top view and sometimes side view is not very successful. It is desirable to stick to a single style.
Feels a bit like the first GTA in a really nostalgic way, love that! The car feels a little clumsy to me, almost like it’s not really relying on the front wheels for steering. Also, the car visuals look a bit dim right now. Maybe adding some subtle effects, like burning rubber when accelerating or a bit of smoke when making sharp turns, could really enhance the look and feel. Overall, great work, this has a lot of potential!
Thanks! This is just the beginning of the project, so I’ll definitely improve the driving model and other aspects. For now, it’s just a very early beta version.
There are currently 6 story missions, and I plan to create around 20 to 30 in total. Additionally, I’m adding other activities, like a basketball mini-game when you enter a backyard court (currently in production, almost finished), or a shooting range where you can practice outside of missions.
The city feels alive — cars move through the streets, and pedestrians walk on the sidewalks and beaches. There are several vehicles to choose from, including a motorboat. You can freely switch between vehicles, but not every vehicle is suitable for every mission (some missions require a specific type of vehicle).
Today I just finished another mission, which includes a police boat chase. Each mission is introduced and followed by short cutscenes.
The AI video in the trailer is very jarring and caused me to view the game more negatively here. I suggest replacing it and any other AI assets with your own work. I find anything, even a sloppy animation, would look better there.
Cutscenes ( if you are talking about this ) are in beta version still, the same as the all game. I still thinking about that. Maybe will do this in comix style only (not animated). The story is very important in this game. But cutscenes are not so important for me now in beta version.
