Hey there! I recently decided to get a bit more serious about my side project (got laid off from the day job ). I wanted to try doing a devlog series, mostly for myself to keep a record and keep on track, but would love to get any feedback from other people if you want to check it out!
I am making a 2d top-down shooter roguelite, where the player is a prisoner on a Mars labor camp when a rebellion breaks out. They manage to steal a hovercraft and go off to… escape? Help the rebellion? Still figuring out some of the narrative side haha that will come later, but the momentum based movement has been the focus so far. I get more into it in the blog/video so please check those out, and if you are willing to try the game out to leave some feedback I would greatly appreciate it!
If you want to follow along you can find me on bluesky at @jking-dev.games on Bluesky, or any of the above sites should work. Thanks for reading this far, have a good one!
@PotatoArmor Yeah I have gotten some feedback about the controls, I will need to work on some tutorialization soon to get players used to them and look into some alternate options. Will be thinking on how to do it best, but I appreciate you trying out the game, thanks!
@soapspangledgames Thank you as well! Yeah a long way to go but thanks for the encouragement!
I found a few ways to improve the visuals pretty dramatically with less work than expected (normal maps and lighting goes a long way!) so will have some updates on that front for the next devlog, planning on putting out an update in a couple weeks.

I like the way the mouse controls are. You could also make the right click button fire alternative weapons. The alternative weapons could be power ups or weapons with limited ammo found throughout the map. The left click will be the main weapons that may or may not require ammo.
