Godot Version
Godot 4.5.2-stable
Question
Just a quick post, it is possible to create a source port game engine using Godot? Is so it would be the same as making a source port in any other form. To be more expecific getting the source code from the game i want to port and rewriting it in gdscript?
Sorry, do you mean the Source game engine like that used in Half Life 2? Do you mean translating any game’s source code into a Godot game? The former would be specifically difficult, the latter ambiguously difficult. If you have the source code for a game you can do anything with it, including re-writing it in any engine. Usually remakes and remasters do this, it can be quite the undertaking.
Good afternoon, i mean translating any game into Godot, sorry for not being more expecific.
Yes, this has been done in the past for many games. You could either reimplement the game logic in GDScript/C#, or reuse the original game logic by compiling it as a library (module/GDExtension).
Sonic Colors Ultimate is an example of a game that was built like this. It uses Godot 3.1 with a custom renderer but kept the original game logic intact.
One hard part of creating a source port with any engine (not just Godot) is usually to write a loader for the original game’s texture/model/sound formats. Model formats in particular can be challenging, as they’re not quite as standardized as other formats. If you have access to existing documentation or prior reverse engineering work, it’ll be significantly easier. Otherwise, you’ll likely need to spend a lot of time in an hex editor to figure out asset formats.
