I have the notifications set to “watching” on this thread, so hopefully I won’t miss a thing!
I recently had some time to continue this exploration. This time, I focused on combat, abilities and enemy behaviours. A lot of it is still janky mostly because of the animations but it is in a good state.
The combat focuses on interactivity with the enemy, environment and enemy weapons. That means being able to deflect enemy projectiles, pull enemies closer, traverse with latches etc
Awesome! I love the style
Wow! This is looking really fun! Good job on the UI.
Is that a grapple ability? Very cool. Can wait to hear the background and lore for your game!
Glad you love it.
It is a little more than just a grappling ability. I have many traversal and combat ideas around it.
Watch this space for more updates.
Have you been making solid progress on this project lately?
Hey, thank you for asking.
You are in luck. Here is a longer gameplay video that features combat combos, additional abilities, and more enemies, all with improved art.
I’m in the process of gathering feedback from people, particularly regarding the art style. I would love to know what you think about the art style. Some people say it’s too close to Hollow Knight, and others think it’s good enough as long as the mechanics are different.
What do you think?
The whole idea behind your game is to be a Hollow Knight-like and you’ve done an excellent job at it, in both terms of art and gameplay! The particles look good too.
I do understand your concern of not wanting to be too close to the original, because, you know, nobody wants to be working for who-knows-how-long on a game, and after releasing it needs to take it down for some legal reason.
That said: the spokes on your targeting effect could be a little bit shorter. You could make characters and enemies a bit more detailed, but if that’s part of the look your going for, i say your going good!
Thank you for being so quick to share an update! It’ll be cool to see/hear music when it’s implemented. You’re doing really good on this project, keep it up.
Your game is looking amazing.
I just wanted to mention that your camera, at least to me, is still a bit janky and abrupt. Perhaps a bit more lag, a slower pan and a bit less reactive would help a lot here. Perhaps I am on my own here but it stood out to me and was a bit discomforting.
Just thought I’d mention it. Your lighting is beautiful btw.
PS The art style is very Hollow Knight, no doubt. But it is still beautiful and taking inspiration is surely fine. They cannot ‘own’ the styling surely. If this were my game, I would find another way to mark objects as interactable, perhaps with a glow or some particle affect. The words appearing take you completely out of any world immersion IMHO. Also I would look at making enemies a touch more obvious on the screen, especially if they are a danger or attacking. How you best do this I don’t know, glowing red eyes perhaps? A dimmish red spotlight? Anyway, this is all opinion and your scenery looks great.
Hi,
Game looks great, as people said, it has a feel of Hollow Knight, but is it a problem? Not for me, as long as the game is great to play and differs in gameplay.
Lighting (as @pauldrewett said) is stunning, well done. (the water part is beautiful)
It feels there are a few (too many for me) camera movement happening, but again it is only through a video, not playing it.
Well done on the first sound effects, which isn’t the easiest part.
Look forward to seeing more.
I really appreciate the feedback.
Music is still very low in my order of priority right now. I’m still trying to get some of the core systems in place first to allow me to easily make more content for the game.
I’ll take the feedback about the targeting into account.
In the next couple of day, I will open a discord server to allow me share constant updates.
Thank you for your feedback.
You are right about the camera. There is still a lot of improvement to be made and I’ll be refining it more as the project goes on. Never knew 2d camera were hard to get right.
I’ll definitely be sharing more.
I get it, it’s nice to get all the game features done for sure!
Would you still be able to post updates here on the Godot forums, for people like me who don’t have discord?
Definitely, I will keep posting updates here. I just don’t want to spam the forum too much with minor updates.
