Retro JRPG: Logislate, Devblog Thingy

Hello, I hope you are well, I have done quite a bit to Logisnesia, and, due to the suggestions of several other amazing individuals, it is now called Logislate.

  • Now for the new, sloppily typed description:

Logislate is a yet-to-be-released turn-based RPG (JRPG) set in a medieval-era world that has gone through some peaceful times after an event called the War of Sages.
The game focuses on the player, who is a drifter–one who goes place to place without any inherent reason, and has no goals in life–, that becomes an old sage’s apprentice after being nearly slain by monsters, and thus healed/saved by this sage;

He trains the player and teaches him or her how to use a power of the Mind, known to sages as NesuPower, usually abbreviated as Nesu; this can be used outside battle or in battle; its uses vary often, but most Nesu can be used to solve or help solve various puzzles that lie in wait, but it costs Mind Points, otherwise known as MP (i am the first to use this abbreviation, because it is so genius.).

Each armor piece in the game protects, or risks, certain parts of a character’s body, with defence increases only being applied to those protected spots; the same logic applies to monsters, luckily, however some spots may only be vulnerable to different Nesu.

Classes are applied based on stat balance, with a few points being able to be allotted to any stats you want. Different classes can use different NesuTypes.
You may also choose to increase the power of a Nesu rather than obtaining another kind, and each level up will grant an option to learn a nesu or increase a Nesu by the next level up; the cycle is essentially, Level Up: Learn last undergone ability; Choose which Ability to hone or learn new one.
The game’s main cast consist of 4 party members alongside other main characters. These four party members including the player character can be customized in the following ways:
Hair color and style, Skin tone, And gender; for the characters that are NOT the hero, the hair color defines the character’s personality type, and this alters gear efficiency based on the gear, and also gives different dialogue actions in the story and when the PartyTalk command is used.
This is to solve the “puppet characters for customization” tradeoff in most games of the same genre; though it will take a lot longer on my end.

The game’s story takes place in 2 worlds, the Light World, and Demon Realm, with the latter being explored halfway through the story, at the climax.
After the hero becomes proficient enough with Nesu to explore on his or her own, the old sage, named Jeremaiya, will “Politely ask” you to investigate the nearby coastal town. This leads you to find out that there are several ancient temples with sealed inside are various demons that guard the Legendary Slate Shards, these structures’ seals have weakened greatly since the War of Sages, and the monsters within are able to extend their grip on the nearby towns that are supposed to keep them in check.

It is said that the Slate Shards, when completed to form the First Sage’s Tablet, are able to channel all the user’s Mind energy into any 1 thing the individual desires, it is also to be noted that the user will be unconscious for several days after using the said tablet.

The battle system is similar to most JRPGs, however battle formation cannot be changed without costing a turn. The defend command allows you to defend one ally, while the defended ally makes a move; this is done for ultimate tacticality.

Every piece of equipment has it’s own overlay, so creativity is very possible. (edited)Wednesday,
Aside from the main story, there is also a romance system that is related to the defend command and other things such as player gender and how the player acts, e.g. taking an herb from some man’s pot. . .

The player can also choose to settle down in a village, and some special classes allow fishing and farming to be possible, among other abilities.
I also intend to add an online trading/bartering system as well as PVP and co-op, though the latter two will be strictly local wireless most likely.

There is some more other than this, but this is probably why i havent said it all before; a lot to say.

Some trivia: the hero is aged 18 at the start of the game. yes that is the greatest info i have said so far.

I dont think i gave a good reference, so uh, here ya go
NOTE, i have no idea why the gif uploads as if it is analog, but i guess thats the good old days, eh? (footage sped up by a bit )

Hahaha!! Exactly my main inspiration! Lol, i feel like so many people will be confused with the Door command, you agree? (its mostly there for parody purposes but does have a real purpose .)

I’m looking forward to trying it! I grew up on NES and SNES RPG’s

In my humble opinion, that’s fine. Loads of these games had translation quirks and weird terms, it just adds to the flavor.

I forget, were you composing the music in a mod tracker?

Thank you, I myself am looking forward to playing as well lol

Yes, i was initially composing in SnesTracker, but due to the fact that all the samples are played at a very high note, I took the liberty to swapping over to Furnace Tracker,
which is much better in my oppinion

Does that mean the game will contain adult content?

Good question! No, its just due to the story and whatnot.
I dont intend to add adult content, etc. for various reasons,
but I will admit i am kinda trying to play it safe due to the marriage/offspring mechanic

Another Sidenote;
Do you all think it would be a cool idea to use 3D models to bring more life to the battle scenes, or should i make the battle scene sprites like i did them before?
(Yes i am suggesting due to Breath Of Fire, Donkey Kong Country, etc. I am going full-on SNES Authentic JRPG here)

This is probably a dumb thing to get opinions on, but I enjoy all of your feedback :slightly_smiling_face:

Do what makes you happy. I like the idea of surprising people with 3D enemies. What I would do though, is make them look like traditional 2D enemies when the battle starts and they’re idling, and then when they attack etc, they jump into the third dimension before going back to idle in 2D.

Thats a very good idea, I will test that out.
And aye, I will do what is best for the game, gotta have a balance between me, and those who would perhaps want to play my game. I really enjoy your feedback, thank you :slightly_smiling_face:

Glad you think so! I am hoping to post a demo sometime soon, 3d model conversion worked like a charm, so if you wanna try it out, keep an eye out for any updates i post :slightly_smiling_face:

Sidenote: *I suddenly feel like the adult content thing will be a running joke with my game, hmm…

First look at the world map—

Dang I got a lot of work ahead of me. . .

Anyways, its killing me, but i have been really refraining from giving any spoilers for the story,
Somehow i just remembered the campfire mechanic, based around Elden Ring, etc.
basically so that you can have multiplayer and whatnot, but in a strategic turn-based RPG.

Many apologies that i did not mention that sooner, truth be told i have had that on my mind for a while, i suppose i am dreading networking, etc. and really dont want to make any promises, but I certainly intend to add that in future.

you know, the world map looks kinda cool minus the little editor center point marker.

Any feedback is highly appreciated—apologies that this is not that great of an update.
