I have heard the snapdragon based laptops last a lot longer without charge, something like 24 hours - has anyone got any experience with them, are they any good for working with Godot ?
I think if my laptop didnt got hot and lasted longer then my productivity would improve.
Lot’s depend on how it’s made.
In case of laptop hinges, casing, fan will be make huge impact on longevity of device.
- generally this is where Apple devices are good because mounting of components have solid basis, and hinges are good compared to other mid-tier brands.
Will you be on linux or windows?
if linux there will be lot’s a issues from what I experienced on Aarch64 on Apple Silicon and similar topics poped for Snapdragon.
For battery lasting, the Snapdragon is no brainer but also it’s nowhere near the Nvidia RTX 5070 for raw performance in 3D.
Working on Windows 11 mostly.
I think I need to get a system that stays cool and lasts longer, doesn’t need to be constantly recharged and is easier to work with.
I wonder whether the Snapdragon systems can run Unreal, as a benchmark.
Then you made a choice already, only looks for validation of decision?
- arm64 is supported for windows
Similar like Apple for UE 5 the arm64 supported was added - here is some limitations Windows ARM64 Support in Unreal Engine 5.8 | Unreal Engine 5.8 Documentation | Epic Developer Community
So pretty much you got answer there.
Ah ok, I guess maybe the Snapdragon is good for other everyday use then. I think it can run Godot though, but the 3D is probably not great.
I could just find a replacement for my Mini PC, its a quiet machine that runs as low as 10W but requires an external screen so no good for when Im travelling or using a cafe or library.
Its funny because the mini PC is actually more playable at 10FPS than the Laptop at 60 FPS, maybe because of the noise and the static.
It’s similar like Apple I guess, on native software it wipe off traditional hardware but for ported apps it losses lot because of translation layers and also GPU is not really comparable because it works different then Nvidia chips.
Maybe when Intel and AMD goes to arm64 it will maybe change, but I doubt it as they heavily invested in their existing products.
I suppose the cost is the other problem … i dont really want to spend £1000 + on a laptop that I find annoying, even it does run anything at high frame rates.
Unfortunately, I don’t think there is ideal device at current market conditions.
Also reminded myself when looked for portable device, I was looking for display brightness and reflectivity.
Pretty much only high end tablets had decent values to be usable outdoor in bright sunlight.
I think the extra performance is good for some, but I actually like efficiency.
I cant believe the cost increase for adding 16 Gb Ram and a 1 TB SSD. Theres a mini PC for sale that costs £300 barebones and over £600 with the memory.
Hopefully that will be less next year.
This is where Mac offered great value because of Mac OS manage unified memory great.
But the prices of all of them went up couple months ago, so from expensive good value to again more expensive good product.
How much ram you like to get BTW?
I would get 32 GB RAM, and at least 1TB for the SSD.
BTW behind snapdragon stands three ex engineers from Apple
Yeh they’re good, i saw theres a Snapdragon in one of the Microsoft Surface laptops.
Also funny fact : it supposed to be originally server chip oriented but it turned into consumer
