Tread Bot - Narrative-driven 8-bit Action Platformer (Alpha 60-minute demo)

Hello everyone! I’ve been working on Tread Bot solo in Godot 3 over the last few years, and I’m finally ready to share a substantial demo of the first 3 chapters (of 9 planned).

The Story:

You play as Penny, an AI researcher who must remote-control a cutting-edge combat robot to stop a self-replicating robot outbreak at the Amanite Applications Lab. The immersive story of this game is just as important as the dynamic action. Unique aspects of the game include the layered narrative, action mechanics (including a saw-blade upgrade!), re-spawning system, and dialogue that reacts to how you die. Original music uplifts the character-driven story.

The Gameplay:

Authentic 8-Bit Soul: NES color palette, 340x240 resolution, integer-pixel movement and CRT emulation

Tech: Developed in Godot 3, and Famitracker-composed music and sound

Scope: This ~60-minute demo covers Chapter 1 (Welcome to the Lab), Chapter 2 (Hyperactive Replication), and Chapter 3 (Factory Infested) including the Saw Blade mechanics and two Factory bosses.

Play the Demo:

I’m hosting the Alpha on Itch. It’s currently password-protected for forum members.

Quick Feedback Template:

Favorite Part: (The Lab, The Factory, the Music?)

Difficulty (1-10): How hard were the Factory Bosses?

Story: Was anything confusing?

Quality: Did anything seem buggy or choppy?

One Suggestion: What’s one thing you’d change?

good

Glad you like it! Did you get a chance to try out the demo?

For a long time I didn’t appreciate how useful shaders are, even for an 8-bit style game. They can be used to rotate sprites while maintaining the proper grid spacing (i.e. not rotating the actual pixels), palette swapping and I even added emulation of old CRT style displays! Super cool.
