Wondering how to set up a pre-rendered background over 3d geometry (kinda like old final fantasy)

Godot 4.2.1


I’m trying to figure out how to approach it but I really have no idea, the best I can figure out is we have 3 elements.

3d geometry, which is covered by → the 2d prerendered image, which is covered by-> the character/npcs/items, which are hidden by → the 3d geometry.

and this is where I get stuck, it seems like it’s possible to have an element always show in front of everything else, but i have no idea how to get this rock paper scissors of show character over pre-render, show pre-render over 3d geometry, 3d geometry hides character.

If theres any info on how to do this i’d love to hear it, if it’s even possible.
