Y sort shadows in 2d?

Godot Version

is there a way to have a sprite appear above shadows it is in front of or below shadows it is behind, similar to how y sorting works between two sprites?

have you tried to always make the shadow be z-index -100 something, so it always behind

The thing is I want it in front sometimes but behind others in order to create a false 3d effect, similar to how sprites can move in front of or behind each other.

it just occurred to me I could do 2d sprites on an orthographically projected 3d environment to achieve a similar effect, but I’m not sure if Godot has systems in place for that.
