An open discussion on the AI activity on the Godot repo + forums

We’re amongst ourselves, I thought that went without saying :joy:

Good point nonetheless,

Cheers !

I think the only thing one really have to ask oneself to begin questioning the value and usefulness of these tools is: Why are these companies so desperate to get us to use it, why do they have to push it on us if it’s so good… If the product worked as well as they claim then wouldn’t everyone just choose to use it?

They’re praying to god that it becomes good later to make infinite money. But the trajectory is not looking good.

We discussed this at length in another thread. The Godot team does not have the bandwidth to deal with this.

This forum does in fact have rules against AI generated answers, and those get flagged and removed. AI generated questions get either no replies, or get called out for using LLMs.

This has also been discussed in previous threads here, and it’s not really a sustainable solution. To your point about the fact that content can be created faster than humans can consume it, a human firewall is not the answer.

AI is great tool for experienced devs, it’s like google search but butter, if not AI learning godot would take me years, not months

like yesterday i had to try to export stuff, and with just godot docs, it would take probably few more days, cuz i haven’t understood stuff in it - thanks to AI and some try&error i’ve managed to encrypt export template by myself, no need to make forum posts, no need to research more, just move on to next thing

but i understand your concerns, AI looks like super magic tool that fixes all problems - when in reality that’s not true, but someone who can’t code or is too lazy sees it that way, making it way too overused than it should be

Encrypting export templates is clearly described in the docs so I don’t see how “AI” was needed to help with this

Also “no need to research more” is not a good thing, relying on one tool that is known for making things up instead of other humans that actually know is a downgrade, not an upgrade (also a huge portion of the time you don’t even need to wait for an answer, someone else has already answered when someone else asked already)

What I really don’t get is the general mentality of “I don’t have to rely on anyone else if I use this tool” or “ah good I don’t have to search the internet for answers any more”

really, i disagree, for me it was very hard to understand docs and why some errors occured, maybe you’re experienced with godot / computers so you’re better off with this

also, no need to research anymore isn’t good or bad, it’s just change, i don’t need to search up internet, but i need to think how to solve problem, how to navigate and all of that - that’s just changing skill from one to another

AI makes things up - but it’s overrated, mostly it’s correct, as long as you’re not blindly following it you’ll be fine, i don’t see the reason why relying on other devs is better than relying on a tool and yourself

before AI was created, some problems that i didn’t understood took me months to grasp, months! but now i can do it in hours, AI is like a screwdriwer, you can place screw inside thread by hands, but with screwdriwer it’s way quicker and easier

And how will you do this if you rely on that alone? Also the hallucinations are not “overrated”

I honestly think this is an issue of your research skills, not the special nature of “AI”, and if you replace learning on your own, what will you do if you can’t use it? The prices for tokens is going up and will continue to do so, and using these tools has been shown to make people more and more dependent on them

Edit: Please note that this is not trying to criticize or shame you, it’s a hard skill to get good at but it takes practice

NGL, i don’t worry about tokens cuz ai i use don’t have them…

But, i never said i rely on AI alone, i said i use AI & experimentation, the latter is very important, cuz if AI says something, i don’t take it, i just analyze it, it’s like you were reading wikipedia, forums, reddit and some random website at once while not reading it at the same time

Maybe my research skills are the issue - but i think that everything is good if it serves you and helps, forcing yourself to research something is pointless waste of time, you could use on something else

Also i fear i’ve started great war, sb said there were wars because of something talking about AI :\

You’re 10x-ing it bro. When’s your game coming out? Next month?

This is a slippery slope though, and research is hardly a pointless waste of time, and that attitude is harmful IMO, it’s like saying “it’s fine to depend on ready made food instead of learning how to cook” (assuming you’re not struggling to do so because you’re disabled, or don’t have a stove like a lot of poor and homeless people do)

It’s becoming dependent on a tool that:

  • Can go away at any moment
  • Can become incredibly expensive at any moment
  • Activelly harms the environment and your brain

And I genuinely care when people get trapped in using these tools instead of actually good and reliable sources for knowledge (trial and error isn’t really making it not relying entirely on “AI”, you’d do that anyway if you did research)

Also do be aware that they’re only “free” because they steal your data…

Yes, it takes years to get good at research (and development).

Being given a quick answer as to how something is done does not really teach you to understand what you did. At a shallow level maybe. But the only way to really learn anything is to put in a lot of effort. And asking help from someone who understands. Not from something that regurgitates knowledge.

We “googled” too. We read books too. We asked other people for help too. But none of them gave the answer away.

Want to guess how long that took?

Maybe, but what about machines? they were also unethical and made a lot of people dependant on them, yet after 300 years we have civilization like never before, i don’t want to start next ice berg - so i’ think you’re right in some cases, tho it’s up to you if you want to use the tool or not

personally i use it to speed up work, but for most stuff i still use forums, so i don’t think it’s that bad, tho again - thx for your opinion

Even when it comes to doing google searches we are using critical thinking to filter and parse answers, that is important in itself

For what purpose? Why does work need to be “sped up”?

So what you’re saying is that “AI” is like people using a car to drive everywhere who become physically unable to walk anywhere far because they never get exercise?

Also no it’s not “up to you” if you become dependent on the tool, or when the companies are constantly pushing it on us

To be clear: I’m not trying to win an argument or make a point as much as I am concerned about people becoming dependent on these tools and thinking they are something they aren’t

Which took years to get good at too.

And yeah I’m starting to notice signs of the LLM regurgitating all sorts of novice mistakes I just put into Github without realizing the danger back then, which reminds me that I still have a lot of work purging repos.

For instance:

The LLM does not realize garbage collected languages can leak memory badly for one.

The LLM does not realize at all!

To get very good it takes time sure but it’s a series of small steps, and if someone never tries they will never reach it

But then that’s also a skill that needs to be learned young, back when I went to school they were still teaching some of this, though I got most of it from my parents
