I’ve started a new program to answer your Godot questions and talk about what we have been doing at the Godot Foundation. The streams will happen on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GodotEngineOfficial every Wednesday at 17:00 CEST.
I’ve done the first stream today and you can watch it here:
I’ve been watching the Blender Studio Dogwalk devlogs a lot, as well as their other open movie projects. The way that the studio team can develop plugins, create educational resources and directly give feedback to the Blender devs seems really useful. Having some nicer demos/“open games” would also probably better show the engine’s capabilities to newcomers (not that the existing demos are terrible, but it would be great to have a demo of a full vertical slice). Obviously the Godot Foundation probably has fewer resources than the Blender Foundation/Institute at the moment, but are there any plans to set up something similar to Blender Studio for Godot in the future?
Question 1:
Right now, every time a new release (including dev/beta builds) comes out, we need to download the full export templates package, which is ~1GB. Most of the time I only need the Android export, but I still have to download all the other platforms. Is there any plan to split the export templates so we can download only the ones we actually need (for example, just Android exports when developing on Windows)?
Question 2:
When it comes to Android SDK updates and policy-related requirements, updates sometimes take months to arrive in a new Godot release. Even when fixes or changes are developed in just a few days, we still end up waiting months until the next full release. While Google often provides deadline extensions, it’s always stressful to be stuck waiting. Is there any chance we’ll see faster turnaround times for Android-related updates and critical bug fixes in the near future?
P.S. I’m very happy with Godot overall — these are just small itches I’ve run into while using the engine.
The streams happen at midnight for me so sadly too late for me to join. I have one question if I may, I’m wondering if you’re aware of the GoZen project (a video editor I’m making with Godot) and what you think of Godot being used to make software that don’t have to do with Game development.
For as far as I know, most software made with Godot, that I’ve seen at least, has had to do with game development in some way. Such as Material maker, RPG in a box, Pixelorama, … Haven’t found projects like GoZen yet which make software which isn’t directly related to game development.
What does the Godot foundation think of the engine’s use for non-game (related) applications? Do you know of any other non-game related projects which use Godot? And do you see a possibility for Godot to grow in the development of non-game related software and tools by its users?
I would like to know if the passivestar theme will be added and also there is a plugin called “asset drawer” you guys should add that also. these features are essential. any plans on doing that?
Will Godot start working on AAA soon?
Because Godot is just one step away from being the King of Game Engines!
I think Godot’s 2D is the best right now, and the only thing we need is stronger 3D.
I’m not a AAA developer but maybe the AAA guys need it : )
