Abracadabra | The Devil's Applause

Abracadabra | The Devil’s Applause

In “Abracadabra | The Devil’s Applause,” players step into the shoes of Professor Arthur Worthington, an ambitious stage magician performing his first major act. The night begins with high hopes, but the sparse, eerie audience immediately casts a shadow over the performance. The faint sound of coughing, the restless shifting of seats, and the distant cry of a baby quickly unsettle Arthur. One audience member, sitting just out of sight in the back, claps and whistles at odd moments, their faint silhouette sending chills down Arthur’s spine.

As Arthur approaches his grand finale, a daring trick involving his prized magician’s hat, an ominous sound of chains echoes through the theater. It grows louder, but Arthur presses forward, struggling to perform the trick. The hat begins to grow, but something feels wrong—it resists, warping unnaturally. The shadowy figure in the back finally speaks, laughing menacingly: “What’s the matter, Arthur? Can’t handle the spotlight?” As the figure steps forward, the sound of chains becomes deafening, and the doors audibly slam and lock shut.

Arthur nervously responds, “It’s fine, sir. All part of the show.” The figure smirks, replying, “Oh, is it?” Suddenly, Arthur begins to hear his name chanted—softly at first, then growing louder. The shadowy figure joins the chant, his voice booming. The weight of the moment becomes unbearable, and Arthur panics. Abandoning the act, he tries to flee the stage, but as he reaches the exit, he finds the doors chained shut. The lights flicker violently, and the chanting crescendos, plunging the theater into chaos. Arthur’s desperate attempts to escape lead him down winding corridors that shouldn’t exist, each turn pulling him deeper into a nightmarish version of the theater.

Arthur soon realizes he’s trapped. Each door he opens leads to a more horrific trial—a twisted version of one of his signature tricks. From deadly, collapsing stages to a labyrinth of mirrors reflecting monstrous versions of himself, each escape attempt becomes a harrowing performance he must survive. Along the way, he encounters ghostly remnants of previous performers who failed to escape, their whispers warning him of the futility of resistance.

As Arthur struggles to survive, the shadowy man lurks in the darkness, watching and taunting him at every turn. Just as Arthur believes he has finally broken free, he finds himself back on the stage, facing the audience of shadowy figures once more. The man steps forward, his grin widening, and says, “Bravo Arthur but the fun has only just begun.” With a snap of his fingers, Arthur bursts into flames, his screams echoing as the screen fades to black.
