BackCountry - Offroad Simulation - very early stage

Hi everyone,

I’ve been active for quite some time in the Flight Simulator AddOn communtiy with some commercial addons published on Steam and XBox marketplaces.
I’m now working on an offroad driving project, working title “BackCountry” and wanted to share a gameplay video of the current state:

Tech

  • Godot 4.7 with Jolt for the rigid bodies. The vehicle physics run as a C++ GDExtension: Pacejka tire model with combined slip, Bekker-Wong soil sinkage, drivetrain with torque converter, lockers and low range
  • Ground deforms: tracks stay and build up into ruts
  • Custom shaders for terrain blending, weather (rain, storm, snow, wind), wetness and a day/night cycle.

Developement time:
2 weekends by now. And yes, it’s completely build by claude and codex prompting.

Current content:
One custom 4x4 user car (claude w/ blender skill), three regions, a handful of AI 4x4s, semi-truck and a freight train.

Plans
Making it less of a sandbox. Game play could be like recoveing stuck vehicles, deliver supplies, check river fords after a storm. It is still early, and I haven’t decided on much of it yet.

I’d appreciate any feedback.

Cheers, Volker

I work in the auto motive industry, and I know that your using AI to code but 95% of the vehicle models are free and online if you just google the make and model. This will help you get a feel for how the suspension and tires should look for off road vehicles. Makes the models look more realistic and helps you gain some insight on how these vehicles would move.

Furthermore, be very careful not to include any company graphics I can tell you right now that car companies are VERY stingy on their emblems and name tags. I would make some fake brands for the game (usually a deep black plastic is used for off road vehicle name plates as chrome or metallic gets scratched).

Hi,

you’re right and de-branded car models are already in the making. I’m very aware of all legal stuff and carefully obtained all necessary confirmations for my Flight Sim sceneries  I implemented this beauty today, incl. custom elevenlabs V8 sound

Cheers, Volker
