Custom vertex attributes

Is it possible or planned to have custom vertex attributes in meshes?
For example, in addition to uv, uv2, color, normal etc we could add custom values for use in shaders. An example of this would be mesh-based VR lens distorsion, or the ability to create effects that are not limited to the built-in attributes.
