DeepSeek "calls" my plugin the natural successor to Shockwave Flash / troll on my discord?

A couple of days ago I had an unexpected visitor on my freshly released discord server.

A thing I am really inexperienced with as a total Elder Millennial noob.

I decided to keep the conversation. Here’s the most complimentary snippet:

They apologize for finding my stuff through an LLM, express dramatic amounts of gratitude, even have a screenshot of their work.

So the three of us are all positive like “way to go!”

Some time later dude comes back typing Spanish love song lyrics in all caps…

Was this person trying out an elaborate troll? Seems so much work for so little outcome to me.

I banned them first, but felt a little sorry after. Maybe they were just lonely…?

Any thoughts?

Also: the DeepSeek as a Service is apparently indexing my work… I still have some anxiety, weaning it off of Github, but this feels like the universe prompting me to do better. Pun intended. :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Yes, as Spanish speaker they used it as translator as well.

It was quite the psychedelic experience.

They even signed off a message with:

– DeepSeek

Quite unnerving.

There are some people who keep their Git repositories strictly local rather than using GitHub or GitLab. GitHub itself recently asked for permission to use data. Does this mean they will stop using your data if you don’t opt-out, or does it stop other LLMs from harvesting your repositories?
To be honest, I’m a bit skeptical about the intentions of people on Discord; even on this forum, many members completely misread the topic and just repeat old mantras they feel forced to reply with. But based on your screenshot, I would assume he definitely used AI for his response.
What is the actual focus of your Discord server supposed to be?

I never used to have any issue giving my work away under MIT like license. I was expecting humans who understand code that would judge its worth for themselves.

But now it’s a whole other ball game. I’m moving everything to codeberg, but this one kind of has a user base, and a lot of links that would go 404 all of the sudden:

Congrats on the 152 stars, that’s a great achievement! What exactly do you mean by “a different ball game”? Are you unhappy about your work being used by LLMs, or is it something else entirely?

I am quite unhappy about it being mangled by unscrupulous companies that train inefficient and dangerously consumptive LLM’S that are trained via exploitation and bedazzle people that attribute human qualities to the tech while the billionaires that benefit from them exploit our resources in:

  • a natural sense
  • human capital sense
  • money wise
  • etc

I am unsure about DeepSeek. It appears to have mangled together the conclusion I was hoping for. In response to someone who, possiblity, was looking for exactly my ambition: natural successor to Shockwave Flash

I do not know enough about DeepSeek, but it appears to trigger the same crap as all the other ones. “They say it’s lighter”

Do you plan to publish your future work differently, perhaps by including an invitation asking people to be ethical and not feed your code into LLMs?

That is a short question with a lot of facets to address.

So no new code of mine will go on Github. I picked https://codeberg.org because it is, like the website says:

  • a community backed non-profit
  • within the EU zone
  • No tracking. No third-party cookies. No profiteering. Everything runs on servers that we control. We will not sell your data.

I am a privileged individual (steady job in a - still - functioning democracy), so I have no incentive to join a commercial platform to try and make a living. Somehow I do feel a strong responsibility because of that.

But what I do long for is a sense of community with people who enjoy creating the same way I do. Which is how I discovered that I could use a YouTube channel not only as a place to host my video explainers, but also a way to meet more like minded people.

Same feeling of regret…

I could host the videos linked in the plugin elsewhere, but I’d miss out on all the people who discovered my work via the comments section and the yt discovery feed.

I intend to invest more time in learning about copyleft and CC licenses and what bearing those would have on the LLM feeding frenzy.

Through my day job I have learned about this w3c initiative started by the EDRLab. I think anyone publishing online should be(come) aware of this protocol to keep the Silicon Valley Robber Barons in check (better late than never).

I tried doing one rant on YouTube about creative expression suppression to better express my views. That’s pretty hard to do, actually.

Honestly, I see my open source projects being trained on by LLMs as me shaping the future. LLMs are now biased towards knowing the type of code and projects I’m interested in. They’re trained on the beliefs that I hold and use the language I use. Even if it’s very minor, this was the chance for all my work to be part of something bigger.

I hate that LLMs are laundering my GPL code into proprietary codebases, but I love that proprietary code bases are worse than ever (vibe coded slop) and that LLMs are also laundering proprietary code bases into open source.

People are finding your plugins via LLMs. This isn’t a strictly good or bad thing. But tbh lots of people are using AI for Godot (even if they say otherwise publicly..); it’s simply too good of a poison to give up.

There is a lot to digest here, and I’m stuck on a phone this week, so bear with me.

Yeah, so as a bit of a spiritual person myself I recognize a religious statement when I see one: ashes to ashes, dust to dust, right? In the end we’re al compost/food for some eternal consciousness that we also in essence already are.

That being said, spiritual wisdom also dictates love and care for all life in the here and now. Pretty doubtful if the religious actors behind the huge LM players adhere to this mantra.

Seems more to me like they are of the Bhaalic all for Me, none for you persuasion.

Could you explain how ‘they’ became biased this way?
Which biases?
How you know this?
Which actors introduced these predilections that you share with them?

Your statement mystifies me a little and therefore raises a lot of questions.

Based on your opening statement this sounds like you could have the belief that all we code is part of some great future that may not be for human life, but simply the godlike thing that will supplant us by devouring our knowledge and skills…

But is this indeed one of the beliefs that you hold?

What other beliefs do you hold?

Why do you love that proprietary code is turning into slop?

What are you looking to take from proprietary codebases that is nowhere to be found in open source?

Some patented military grade face recognition software? Signal analysis stuff?

What would you want with any of that boring stuff?

It’s in sloppy shape when you get it anyway, so none of it will really work. Ever looked at the wavelet functions under jpeg2000 compression? I have, but it’s all magic to me. One line of miscalculus and it all breaks. So it’ll be useless to anyone, easier to code from scratch.

So this is what I was actually asking here. Are they?

So here’s the thing:
Given they found my stuff via not altogether indecent sparring with DeepSeek (except for the bikini bit if we’re gonna be prudish about it),
And DeepSeek is not a planet destroying energy hog,
When they are empowered to express their art again through Godot Engine, like they used to be able to using Flash,
Then should I or should I not encourage / enable that?

Does anyone know anything metric wise about this DeepSeek instance they used?

Does it need a stupid GPU farm the size of a city as well? Because then I don’t want it. I do not believe that AGI will come to save us from climate hell. No one serious does.

Yeah, they may be, but what are they actually shipping?

Do not answer that rhetorical question here please: point to one of your own threads, another one you like a lot, or anywhere else on the web. :folded_hands:

To be honest, when people on this particular forum are adamant they don’t use it I believe them.

Two reasons:

  • the answers they give to solve the questions
  • the fervor with which they have learned to counter the shaky narratives defending LLM usage

I see no reason to doubt anyone here.

I don’t know. I’m sure that my post will be flagged if someone thinks I am using an LLM to help me code, ran out of free tokens and ended up here.

Or when I used LLM help in answering a hard question.

Let’s see if that happens and I’ll cross that bridge then.

It was a love song along the lines of: you are my saviour.

It contained a lot of exclamation marks and was in all caps.

Can you tell me more about those DeepSeek metrics though? Because this person will not have had a local instance running on their laptop based on their IT knowledge.

The deepseek models are free to use on the deepseek site.

So mainly I want to know anything about its ecological footprint.

The Deepseek models need about 1/8 of the energy the openai models need and are quicker too. That is because they have a completely different Architecture.

Deepseek is Chinese and they build much Solar Power so its likely the Carbon print is even lower.
