Diablo 3D: the 1996 classic rebuilt in first person in Godot 4 (free demo)

Hi all, Danny here from the Diablo 3D team. We’ve been rebuilding the original Diablo’s Tristram and first Cathedral level as a first-person action RPG in Godot 4, and the free Windows demo is now out.

What’s in it

  • Tristram rebuilt in 3D, tile for tile from the original town map, with the nine townsfolk and their original lines
  • Cathedral level 1, generated on every descent by a GDScript port of the original level generator
  • Warrior, Rogue and Sorcerer with the original stats, to-hit/damage/crit/block rules, durability and repair
  • First-person melee with shield blocking, a hold-to-draw bow, and Firebolt, Charged Bolt and Inferno
  • Magic items that roll by the original affix tables; the original interface layout, plus a Modern skin
  • Ultrawide up to 5120x1440, rebindable keys

A few Godot notes, in case they’re useful to anyone

  • The dungeon is the hardest part: the original generator outputs a 2D grid of tile types, and a builder turns that into 3D geometry (walls, arches, groin-vaulted ceilings, doors) at 1 tile = 2 m. Keeping it data-driven meant every new seed just works.
  • All the game rules live in JSON tables generated from the original data by a Python pipeline, so GDScript only implements formulas and never hard-codes stats.
  • The UI is laid out in the original 640x480 coordinates and scaled by a single factor, which made ultrawide and 4K support almost free.
  • GDScript 4 with strict typing (Variant-inference warnings as errors) caught a surprising number of bugs early.

It’s a fan project and only level 1 of 16 so far. We’d really like feedback from other Godot devs on performance (it wants a 6 GB+ VRAM GPU right now) and on how the first-person combat feels.

Great project !
If you don’t want problems with ActiBlizz, you should change the UI arts.
