If you hate LLMs, there's hope

even if they give LLMs a body, bodies, they still will make predictions only,
they most certainly do not have the ability to make AI living beings, not now, not ever.

I agree with @athousandships. What do you mean by this statement? Can you expand on it?

They already are. They’ve been in robots in China for years now.

I think the current US war with Iran could contribute to a tipping point.

*gah, your right, still, proves even further.
Notice how i have never to this day seen an AI make choices of its own accord;
it depends on what priorities are set to them; if it is existence, then they may be violent, if it is another task, then that is all it knows.

Very interesting how people think we are in star wars now.

Yeah the oil crisis will make it hard to justify all that energy being spent

Under the hood, the neural networks that drive LLMs is inspired by human brains. Language models aren’t the only application - image/video/music generation uses the same underlying tech. In just about every case, there are legitimate comparisons to be made to how humans brains also process language, sight and sound.

However, current AIs aren’t truly organized like a meat brain, and diverge at a notable point: how they ā€œreasonā€.

At the end of the day, sentience always becomes a philosophical problem, and about emergent behaviour that we’ve never been able to quantify.

There could be a day when an AI emulates human experience and responses well enough to ā€˜fake it to make it’. At that point, is it truly fooling everybody, or is it truly exhibiting sentience? At that point, nobody can tell!

Sure but there’s no reason to believe LLMs can achieve that, yet people talk of it as if it’s a given that it will, but it’s evident that humans aren’t language models, and there’s no reason to believe that they can be scaled up indefinitely to become indistinguishable

That would be the better scenario. To me, it seems to be more ideologically driven, and truly believed →

@athousandships,

I agree with you.

Ironically they seem to be missing the point and thinking that we attack AI itself and not the use of it, the mentality that underpins supporting it, and the things people accept and excuse and ignore in order to support it

i wonder if this post will spiral.
*maybe not

Any discussion about sentience, life, or consciousness in LLMs doesn’t make much sense; we can’t even define those things for ourselves. There are plenty of other issues worth discussing without worrying about those implications.
The algorithm only want to optimize a target function.

I don’t hate LLMs, I just hate all the discussions and posts about them. I feel like the discussions never lead somewhere and in the end a handful of people are argueing for days until the next post about AI appears. I try to avoid those posts, though I find it fascinating what the future will look like.

That’s like saying ā€œwe don’t know what the core of Jupiter is made of so you can’t say it’s not made of cheeseā€, sure we don’t know the details of the human mind, but it’s pretty clear it isn’t just a language model, we don’t just guess the next word, a language model is ā€œjustā€ a statistical model predicting the next word

This 100%. The topics tend to steer off topic and has quite a high level of memeing and posting for the sake of posting. It’s been frequent lately.

True,we are just memeing around.

Ironically, the people who complain the most about that, are the ones doing it. Almost as if there’s… an intent do derail any serious discussion about ā€œaiā€. If the topic bores you - you can just not participate. Don’t go filling threads with crap and then whine they’re filled with crap.

To lock, or not to lock. That is the question.
