Hello, I would like to ask if being a programmer is a good job.
Specifically, I would like to ask if it is easy to find work as a programmer and if AI will replace programmers in a few years.
The first question is, assuming I have a university degree, would it be difficult to find a job, and if I did find one, would I have good working conditions, such as a good salary, good vacation time, and good hours?
The second question is because AI is advancing very quickly and is already capable of programming certain things and creating characters and music for video games. I know that most people donât like AI being used, and in some competitions you are disqualified if you use it. But do you think thatâs enough to prevent programmers from being replaced?
How exactly do you âknowâ this? Just because your particular youtube or social bubble is filled with negative stuff. Donât confuse dislike of slop with a dislike of the tool used to make that slop.
Since 2023 it has been just six months until programmers jobs are all gone. And that comment was repeated by a major CEO just this month. I call this the Elon effect, yeah the roadster will be here next year (2018). Still no roadster. Well be on mars next year (2019), our robots will be better than surgeons next year (2023).
In what sort of world where there are more and more computing devices being used would programmers not be needed? The actual job might change, but it wonât go. Someone has to give instructions to machines, they donât instruct themselves. If a tool makes giving instructions easier or faster, great. Otherwise weâd all be still making punch cards.
Programming is as good a job as any other job. Sure, it can pay well in most regions and offers flexible work in many fields. A degree helps, but your actual skills and portfolio matter more.
No, AI is not going to âreplaceâ programmers anytime soon. It can assist with coding, not replace the people who design systems (most of the time itâs wrong anyway; you just have to be able to know when itâs wrong). The only type of people itâs going to replace are those who never cared to code to begin with. You seem to be a bit overdosed on the internetâs AI doomerism/glaze. Personally, I donât see it evolving in the way you might be thinking anytime soon. There are some great videos Iâve found on YouTube explaining this better.
In general youâre asking so many things, to the point I donât get what kind of answer youâre expecting. There isnât a one-size-fits-all solution to get your life together. Itâs something everyone figures out step by step, at their own pace. Try to be a little easier on yourself and focus on what you can control right now. Youâre not behind, and youâre not alone in feeling unsure.
Sorry if I sound a bit rude, but I hope my words can help a little
As for picking a University course, the best advice is to pick something you genuinely love. Donât do computing degree unless you love it already. And donât pay all that money and spend 3 years studying something you really donât like. It is a recipe for disaster.
And donât worry about getting a job until its time to find a job. By then you might have had an idea for your own business, and you potentially will never need a job.
