Lighting on billboarded sprite getting cut off

I’ve been trying to get lighting to work in my game which uses billboarded 3D sprites, and the lighting keeps getting weirdly cut off at certain angles, like so. Disabling billboarding does fix it, but to keep the style of the game I would very much prefer to have billboarding and proper lighting, if anyone knows how. This effect is impacted by the angle of the light, but I don’t know how relevant that is to fixing the problem.

Have you tried the 4.1 release candidate? I don’t know if it would fix it, but it’s easy to try and better than what I’m going to suggest next.

Have you tried manually rotating the sprite towards the camera (after turning of the billboard setting of course)? It shouldn’t be too hard and it would get you what you want.
