Not sure if this will be guide or discussion so for now general.
Not many games are exported to Mac, because of myths about naming, notarization etc.
Yes, it’s not straight as Window but type one command to terminal is not that difficult.
First I want to clear one thing:
Windows user confirmed for project which I made, saved and he exported on Windows to Mac it activated Game Mode.
So this means: Is initial project with export settings on Mac version of Godot Editor different to Windows ?
I noticed the two users used Ad-hoc for export but this literally make opening impossible to my knowledge on MacOS Tahoe.
There is way to notarize and sign app with Free Dev Apple Developer account, but this will expire after 7-10 days usually. ( It also require sign into Apple account, Xcode, and bit hacky way to find ID and bundle inside signed dummy project).
So this basically is not practical, for Dev or end user either.
All the end user have to do is
copy MyGame.app into Applications folder on Mac, and then type in terminal
sudo xattr -cr path/to/MyGame.app
enter password and that is.
But back to Game Mode, as this is great for Controller as you press Xbox button( I don’t have Playstation so don’t know if there is similar thing), you get Game Mode overlay and a bit better performance on Apple Silicone Mac’s.
What do you generally thinging about exporting Mac along Windows? I mean this is literally way to do it without paying every year for Apple Dev program.
Here is test project which was used to test Game Mode.
Let me know if you spot any difference which you would typically do to Windows to Mac workflow.
Asking this from a user is never okay, and most will skip your game entirely just because you ask them to open a terminal.
But sadly, the truth is that there’s no getting around to paying Apple if you truly wish to provide a good experience to your users on mac.
Even IF you pay apple yearly (which I do), your real, legal name will be etched into the executable file you give out to users. In fact, I believe this is the same even if you have a free apple developer account.
I’d say simply don’t bother with mac. The userbase is tiny compared to Windows, and I don’t think it’s worth having your real identity essentially doxxed just to release your game on MacOS as well.
You don’t have to use real name, it’s only Apple Team ID which is pretty random, rest is opt to you as you with to use it, you can make difference between billing and account itself.
This is sad.
I mean for free games, it just makes sense at least for those people which want’s to try Game and not have Windows machine.
You have to use your real name when you sign up for an Apple Developer account. Not doing so is against the rules and can get your entire account banned. Your real name is absolutely recoverable from the executable unfortunately.
yes, you right if you use real name then it will be recoverable
I didn’t know it was against the rules, or someone would even care when seeing so many Chinese releases on App Store. ( Many of them don’t sound real, but whatever.)
How exactly were you able to sign up for an Apple developer account without having to verify your government ID? It’s a requirement for a long while now, and apple takes this very seriously.
When you sign up, you essentially enter intro a contract. It’s against the law in a lot of places to enter into a contract with a fake name.
