Make "First/Last name" fields in the "Register" form optional

I just registered – and briefly got irritated by the requirement to enter a first and last name:

However, after complying with that demand & clicking the verification link, I learned it is indeed optional (as one would expect) – and whatever was entered previously can be safely removed again now:

+1 - Having a mandatory first/last name field that is both mandatory and presumably publicly displayed encourages poor internet hygiene that puts users at risk. Making the fields fully optional, or removing them from the signup process altogether, would help prevent inexperienced or uncareful users from leaking personal information.

This is definitely a good idea. I’ll look into this once I have a bit more time than I currently have

I personally know someone with no last name and this would irate.
