Questions and issues related to the global Godot environment, new category suggestion

Hello everyone!
I’ve been looking around for a few days as I’m discovering Godot (coming from Unity) and learning how the engine, the editor and the community are working…

I feel like several questions I’ve been meaning to ask don’t really fit any category or subcategory of this forum though. And yet they feel way too specific to just be put in the “general” category which is very widely defined as for topics “that don’t fit into any other existing category”.

I think a “Godot environment” category or help-subcategory could be added to gather all the questions we might have about the editor (globally), the documentation, the several github repositories or the godot website for example.

Here are some example of the type of questions I’m talking about:

  • “What does this button in the Godot editor do exactly ?” (if not obviously related to another specific help category)
  • “Does this QoL feature of this other game engine editor exist in Godot editor ? How is it called / Where is it if so ?”
  • “Where should this issue I’m facing be reported ?”
    → bug in godot
    → missing info in doc
    → feature propositon
→ not actually an issue just an user error or misunderstanding
  • “How could this problem be improved into a feature proposition? Is there one already existing for it? What keyword am I missing to find related topics?”
  • “Where could I find this quite specific information to help contribute?”
→ a specific github repo of godot (engine, doc, etc…)
    Godot Interactive Changelog
    the blog
→ it isn’t easily available yet (but perhaps it could be added?)

I feel like having a dedicated category for this kind of issues would incentivize people to ask about them, and help to find similar problem. It could also be useful to some extent to detect onboarding issues with new users of godot: topics in this category that would be often visited could mean an information needed by a good amount of people is missed. And in the meantime of searching how to correct it, the solution would be available in the forum post!

I’m not sure about the name “Godot environment” though, but that’s the best I found for now: wide enough to regroup all these kind of issues and not too simple as to avoid it stealing all godot-editor related questions instead of their correct help subcategory (if they have one). Perhaps some of you have better ideas ?

If it is a new category it could be separated further with some subcategories like for example:

  • Godot Editor [but this could also be a new subcategory in the help category instead in this case]
  • Online Official Ressources Feedback (documentation, website…)
  • Project Contribution (github, issue reporting, feature proposition…)
  • Forum Feedback [the current content of this “Forum Feedback” category since it already exists]

Strikes me as a good idea to add one about the editor itself.

I think the forum feedback is done as you said and the other two could possible be rolled into one, although not sure what you would call it. There is the top level category of resources, so perhaps a sub topic in there might be nice too. Although they are different than the current meaning of the resources category.

Environment is good but I agree not quite right either. Perhaps Godot project?

Godot Project

  • Godot Editor
  • GDscript
  • Contributions and Reporting
  • ? (Documentation, the website, discord etc)

I can also see why the mods are not keen on an ever expanding category base too since these might not be too busy, risk overlap and cause category confusion. These questions could also all sit in general quite easily.

I also think a Chit Chat in general would be good too. But I can see how the further off topic we go the more of an issue it might be for Godot forum.

Just lending my support to your idea of an editor category somewhere.
