Skippy's Grand Escape - Tactical Maze Runner

Had a lot of free time due to an injury and needed something, some project, to not go crazy. Gave game development a shot and got REALLY excited about it . Little did I know that coding and digital art is this much fun (and also this much insanity :-D).
It helped a lot that the Godot engine was really nice to learn (not that I’ve finished learning…) and that there are so many good resources and help for it  What a great community this is!

The concept probably isn’t that great or interesting, but I’m going to go the whole distance with my ā€œlearning projectā€ as kind of a lifetime-achievement of sorts: To have my very own game on Steam. As a games enthusiast, this means a lot to me.

Skippy’s Grand Escape is just a 2D top down maze runner in a space theme, but with a skill system, enemies, anomalies and leaderboards for the fastest times.

From having zero developer skills to a full game was a very wild ride so far, but also insanely rewarding. Will take so much more time to finish it than I ever could imagine, though.

Tonight I finished the trailer:

After WAY too much development time I finally had the courage to let some people test the game. Oh boy did my to-do list grow since then :stuck_out_tongue: A whole lot of very good bug reports, improvement suggestions, etc. I’m amazed how differently the game can be player

Some stats:

  • The game has multiple modes for different player types: Relaxed, Time Attack and Hardcore
  • 6 sectors with 6 core levels + 1 optional level each = 42 levels in total, all connected by a Super Mario Bros 3 like overworld
  • 15 skills to experiment with
  • Runs great on Steamdeck
  • 25 Steam achievements
  • Demo available soon
  • No generative AI usage
  • Used AI for coding help only when I got stuck for more too many hours and not been able to solve the problem on my own

Can’t wait to finish the ā€œlearning projectā€ to work on a more promising and cooler concept.

Any feedback for the trailer, Steam page or the game in general is very welcome. Thoughts, feelings… they all matter to me.
