There was an article I read a few months ago that I can no longer find. It had maps of the US since the 1700s showing the most common job in each state. At one point, it was Blacksmithing. That is an artisanal job these days. You’re either an artist, historian or farrier if you make money as a blacksmith these days.
I see a lot of parallels between blacksmithing and programming. Among which is that both trades gave a larger than average income in their time. I think the time of programmers might be over. Doesn’t mean the decline will be fast, but again, I think that all the “coders” who aren’t architects, are going to find they lost their jobs to LLMs. Because TBH, I would much rather have to argue with an LLM about code than a human who has a will and feelings. (I’d rather do neither…)
How, though? I’ll admit I haven’t looked too deeply into the technology behind LLMs, but as I understand it, they can’t create anything original. They just regurgitate stuff that’s already been done. I suppose most of the building blocks to make new things are already on the web. Though it seems like having LLMs put those blocks together would be an inefficient, bug and security hole infested nightmare. …kind of like a lot of software today. Ooooh, I get it now.

I talk about how they work in other threads on here, so I recommend some reading if you’re interested. “Original” is an interesting word. We all copy. I think I would choose “uninspired” instead.

I said this in another thread, but I have no choice. I have to stay up to date to make the monies. I did the agent thing for my brother because it allowed me to explore the technology. It’s easier to be critical of things when you understand them. You know that.
Agreed. It’s an acceleration of significant and devastating proportions. Which I talk about a lot in previous threads on here.
I’ve yet to see this “acceleration”. Where’s all that ingenious software made by x100 LLM coding? Do we have any new operating systems or programming languages, any professional grade multimedia packages..? It’s just endless sub par rehashes of same old same old web crap nobody cares about, and courses about how to do it.
The only noticeable acceleration is in bubble inflation. The recent Mythos PR stunt increased Anthropic’s valuation from 300 billion to a trillion, without even releasing the thing.
Save for stock owners, LLMs bring dubious short term benefits only to two parts of wider population: bottom feeders and scammers. The former finally get to cosplay as competent and a license to bully the actually competent, and the latter get to scale their operations by several orders of magnitude without much additional effort.
Yep, it’s not that the tech is not interesting, with plenty of ethical and relevant applications.
It’s just its current commercial implementation and marketing approach is built on lies, more lies and even more greed and you guessed it, lies.
The enshittified jobs of data annotations are what awaits a lot of junior and senior programmers, as well as other skilled artisans, if we keep giving money to these selfish and quite nihilistic ahole billionaires, come to think of it : they think nothing of the impacts on people and our ecosystems of all their psychotic technophilia… As long as they get richer, they simply DGAF.

To be clear, I did not mean to imply that LLM coding would improve, or even meet the speed or quality of pre-LLM coding. In fact, I expect both to drop. But if it’s cheaper, and “good enough”, it will win in a capitalist market.

Agreed. But the problem is that our collective bargaining power is pretty much gone since the stock market shot LLM investors to the top. It created so much wealth (even though just on paper) that it made the buying power of the common person negligible in affecting the course of LLMs IMO.
I believe AI making a entire game takes all the fun and will just summon AI bros. Make atleast 1 part of your game and feel free to call it yours. Or just use AI code as a placeholder!
I don’t understand why they’d need to make a dedicated “LLM-powered” game engine. The sharp increase in games being released on Steam since LLMs went commercial suggests people are using them to make games just fine with existing tools, so this “Immense Engine” seems redundant at best.
If this engine is ever publicly released, I doubt it will be noteworthy outside of AI techbro circles.
It’s just empty rhetoric, slapping an “ai” sticker over it to appear relevant and get media attention in the current climate. Precisely like slapping a “.com” sticker back in the day. It’s one of the sure signs we’re in the middle of a bubble.

This engine sounds like a grant phising scam.

This reeks of another EU grant cash grab and only garbage comes out of those, I’d love to be wrong though.
This obviously is a play to get some of that VC and sovereignty fund money. If your goal was to build something, you go and build it. If your goal is to get money people take interest in you, you go on a press tour and start throwing buzzwords.
