Was there a game with such a concept before this (Jono)?

A game that only one can play, the rest is watching and is waiting in queue.
Found this on Reddit, made with Godot.

There are always100-300 players watching (not all in the queue), waiting and cheering on hard levels. Little bit like a twitch stream but the streamer will change after some minutes. Target is to reach level 1,000,000. Now, after 17 days it’s at level 90,866. For one mode the players can build levels with an ingame editor. Can be only uploaded if you solved the level by yourself, to ensure it’s playable.
It’s strangely entertaining, and I don’t play platformers.

Was there something like this before or is this a new idea and could start a new genre?
IMHO it’s an interesting concept.

There was a jam game I liked somewhat similar to this. Every level had a door with a lock you had to hack in one of two ways, you could wait out a timer or choose to clobber the system and the next player would have to wait twice as long until some threshold when clobbering doesn’t work. The game was designed to die essentially. Wish I could remember it’s name.

A more obvious comparison would be Twitch Plays Pokemon, I still read back on the stories that first play through formed. Looking back on it I’m surprised it was so short, I could’ve sworn I stayed up playing for more than week.

I don’t think this will spur on a new genre, or if it does it would be something like Twitch Plays Pokemon. The experience is kind of in the fact that there is one popular game doing it, with a hundred disparate clones it’s less interesting to see a short queue and have no one cheer you on. It’s like the old saying if a tree falls in the woods, but if your multiplayer game doesn’t have any players- is it a multiplayer game? And these sorts of games do rely on many players to be unique.

It’s something where 100 (genAI) clones of it wouldn’t make sense, when there are not many people playing it. Only the viral ones would succeed. Yep agree that’s the point why it will not have many of them to count as a new “genre”.
But i like the idea here. It’s absurd, that a game with only one player world wide playing, could be a successful title. (viewer not counted, for the meme).

Apparently, standing in queues passes for entertainment these days
I certainly wouldn’t. There’s nothing special about the game itself. In fact it looks and feels mediocre, even bad. Once you ingest the supposed novelty of waiting in line, there’s not much left there. The levels are boring and lack variety. There’s no progression. Looks like the game clones itself as it goes
Not sure how this could constitute a “genre”, but then again I just might be an unc here.

I definitely wouldn’t play just to wait around in a queue and I wouldn’t enjoy playing knowing that others are waiting to.

There’s also the fact that this will just get hacked so someone in the queue can jump the line. I used to play MAG on PS3 which is a team first person shooter with a command chain. The higher up you are, the more strategic abilities you can give your team. I used to enjoy it until clans would vote the leaders out because they didn’t get high ranks. You couldn’t rejoin the game and would have to wait for ages to find another and hopefully not get kicked from that one.

If you want to watch someone play a game then use YouTube. There’s already too many idle games and walking simulators with next to no interaction.

Yep, wouldn’t play it either for long. just saw that It got my attention (for 10 minutes) and that there are astonishing many people hooked by it. As it is a concept that I have not seen before, I was thinking about the implications of this idea. That’s all. it’s not the grates idea, but was unique enough to post it here.
Yep it’s a shame that a lot of ideas are not working because of people. Clans in multiplayer are a pain.
