All code is gone after removing scripts from a folder

Godot Version

4.7

Question

Please help, I was trying to put all my code in folders to make it neater, but it gave me errors. So, I tried to take the files out of the folder and now they are all gone. It isn’t in my recycling bin and I’m afraid to reload my project because I don’t if all my code that I worked on for so long will be gone. Please help I don’t know what to do and am panicking.

This is very little information to be able to help you.
“gave me errors” doesn’t mean much. What did the errors actually say?

If the files themselves are gone, then I’m afraid this is a hard lesson to use a Version Control System such as Git.

I have figured it all out, i am just using a saved version off of github. Basically all my code is just gone. It was telling me that the files arent able to be found.

How did you move the files? Generally you should NOT move the files outside of Godot, since the editor won’t know about the move. If you want to move scrips or any other files around in your project, do it inside the godot editor, NOT your file explorer.

I did just that, I moved the files using the file editor.

In that case I’m not sure what went wrong, if you did move the files using Godot, then perhaps your SSD / Hard Drive is failing?

Is your project on a cloud drive? Such as OneDrive or Dropbox? If so, please move it somewhere local, it’s not supported to have project and source files on a cloud backed partition or folder.

I moved the files using the windows file manager, not the godot editor.

Then that’s the problem, as I said above, you should not do that. You should only move files using Godot itself.

I wasn’t aware of that, since I am relatively new to Godot. Oh well, good lesson I guess. At least I wasn’t too far in.

Do try to learn how git works, it will save you a lot of trouble in the long run, since you can just restore your files to a previous version whenever needed! There are some great beginner tutorials out there for Git.

Alright, thank you I will. Thanks so much for the help.
