Any suggested resources to learn (low poly) 3D?

Hi there :waving_hand:,

After finishing my first game, I am slowly thinking about a next game, but not before I did some other fun projects in between. This post functions more as part of my research for my next game.

I am contemplating whether I want to dip my toes into 3D yet. Low poly specifically. The style really appeals to me (Especially this portfolio that crossed my LinkedIn feed) and I figured it would be good to get some 3D experience in, but I have a few questions.

Before I would eventually start a 3D project, I’ll make sure to go through the Your first 3D game in the docs of course.

  1. From what I gathered there’s a variety of softwares I could use for 3D. It seems Blender is mostly recommended, and apparently pretty common in the industry anyways. Now I don’t see myself ever needing that in a professional setting, but then again it wouldn’t hurt to get some experience in either. On the other hand, I read things about other (probably) simpler tools, like Blockbench, which, for my limited hobby scope of projects, might be a better fit, as it would probably result in faster development time. But I’m unsure if this is true, so I’m curious about your experience with either of those programs, or perhaps one that’s not listed and why you chose it?

  2. There are a lot of tutorials on getting started with those tools, but again I would like to ask about your experience. How did you learn the software? Any tutorials or courses that clicked for you? I screened some videos and written tutorials and there’s a lot to choose from, just curious what worked for you?

  3. Any other tips you would give me? Would you advice against going 3D in your second game and first focus on more engine knowledge perhaps? Anything else?

Thanks in advance!

Blockbench can export to GLB, according to its documentation, so it should be fine.

2D vs. 3D in Godot is a pretty small step API-wise, so there is no reason to not pursue 3D if it interests you.

BlenderGuru on Youtube is all you need.

You too can make a Doughnut, and you will!

Thanks @soapspangledgames and @OriginalBadBoy for both pointers :raising_hands:
