I realize this topic is risking getting me banned as any question regarding Godot seems to be at the moment, but, I am really worried about the survival of Godot. I was looking at the idea of doing a game when the Brackeys tutorial came online and I thought I am enjoying this software much better and more intuitive than Unity and was only looking at a 2D game so didn’t want to revisit Unreal.
Anyway, I have just become aware of crazy goings on at Godot with users being called “the filth of humanity”, and much, much worse, mass bannings and even people who are funding the Godot Projects being banned, funding that is keeping Godot alive and improving, and if this is the result and keeps happening can Godot survive and for how much longer.
Can anyone allay my fears that Godot is here for the long-haul and all this craziness will stop? So, I can get back to using the best 2D engine ever.
I would encourage you to remember that this seems to be a single person (the community manager) gone rogue using the godot twitter account as a platform for their specific political agenda.
This person’s opinion doesn’t really matter, and while its true that trust can be broken much faster than it can be earned, it’s also true that a single bad faith actor should not be able to erode the trust earned of a whole community over a decade.
I have personally chosen to wait and see how this situation is resolved by people who arguably matter more (the creator and core maintainers of the engine) before I make any emotional fueled decisions. At the end of the day, this is free and open source software that is a tool to make games. The whole politics / activism movement that is creeping into software recently is a separate issue to the tool itself, and they should be discussed / actioned separately IMO. Just something to think about.
I would be careful to build up your identity or behavior around a tool. If you use godot, it doesn’t mean you agree or disagree with any or all political topics that may or may not be associated with that tool. And so what I’m trying to say is, any of these topics shouldn’t dictate if you use the tool or not. As I said, discussing the political issues and agreeing or disagreeing with them is a separate issue, and so don’t let it leak into your decision making around a tool, if that makes sense?
I don’t condone the personal attacks from either side of the aisle. Unnecessary insults started the issue and some more escalated the situation and continue to do so. Its a problem when posts like this don’t address the cause of all of this. People on twitter were complaining and saying that “woke” studios always use pre built engines because they can’t build their own engines (which is a silly idea).
Then the Godot twitter responded and soon insults were traded. I agree that those who represent Godot shouldn’t engage in this behavior. The mass banning may have been a bit much, particularly for those who didn’t cross the code of conduct. The craziness didn’t start with anyone from Godot, but with hateful comments directed at anyone who doesn’t develop their own engine.
Context is important when it comes to discussing this situation. All that said, Godot will be fine. We can learn to be better with one another online. Move on, make games. Happy development, everyone.
The craziness started here, with deleted messages and blocked discussion.
This post is a statement of support and not an invitation to discuss. To keep things focused, we removed all replies regardless of content and locked the topic.
Yup. For the reason that my post was already deleted. Which means someone in the administration didn’t like it. Since I didn’t get a reply, I can’t know the reasons why. But the fact that there is a chance of a full ban — I think it is necessary to take into account.
If you’re upset because of Godot’s support of the LGBTQ+ communities, and you refuse to elaborate why here, then I can only assume that you don’t approve of these communities. I welcome Godot’s support and fail to see the issue here.
