I am a student at university and I want to make a 2D game with Godot but I cannot do it even I have all the tools . I am always thinking about the future and how my projects will end and I cannot focus on a single thing bc of that .I use AI to build it fast but then I cannot change it . İts like infinite loop for me for 2 months . I know I should be slow but I cannot my brain does not work like that . I get sleepy when I do things slow but coding requires patience and I dont have it. Any advice for me and people like me .
Stop using AI for one, don’t outsource thinking. As for the rest, break down your problems into small parts. You will quickly burn out of you try to create an entire system all at once, but if you learn how to create small, easy to do tasks for yourself, you’ll be able to get a lot further.
You’re going to start doing discipline. Yes, you will start out slow but eventually you will actually start enjoying it. If you keep using AI, the look might stay so start using it less . Also to stop overthinking and stuff, just break down your game in parts. Like Day 1: Title Screen Day 2: Menu and so on. Good Luck!
Sounds like using AI is severely hampering your creativity.
Why not shift focus from coding game mechanics and generating scripts to prototyping your own ideas by drawing your own art in engine?
Try (shameless plug) a nice plugin that helps you do that:
(Last shameless plug for this week. I promise)
As everyone else said, I’d drop the AI; it gives you unrealistic expectations, and it atrophies your programming muscles. It also takes away the feeling of achievement; “I did this” and “someone/something did this for me” are very different feelings.
As for focus, I’d advise starting out with projects at a scale you can finish in a couple of days; something that won’t take long, but which will be complete, and completely understandable with a relatively simple scan. That should help give you the patience and the confidence to scale up to larger projects.
Old arcade games (Space Invaders, Pac Man, Defender, Berserk, Qix…) can be great for this; the rules, graphics and controls are simple. They were complex and difficult beasts back when they were made due to the hardware limitations of the time, but these days with all the support frameworks available (Like, say, Godot, and art tools…) they’re trivial to make.
Get rid of sugar/carbs and caffeine.
damn that’s my whole diet ![]()
It only applies if you don’t have patience ![]()
Maybe game jams would help? I know the deadline might be stressful but it could force you to make small projects (obviously talking about short game jams). The themes could also help you be more creative and help you get ideas. Also very important detail, you should drop the AI. Coding probably seems slow and boring because you don’t feel rewarded for your work and you seem confused about what you’re doing instead of feeling like you’re doing real progression.
Well, perhaps you are not a coder. If you don’t find the joy in solving a coding challenge then I don’t think it is for you.
And FYI, the only successful ‘vibe coders’ are actually coders already, and are putting in a lot of work getting AI to use the correct architectures, as well as debugging and fixing code, and avoiding dangerous or just plain silly code. Often more work than doing it yourself in the first place would be.
In my opinion, ‘vibe coding’ will be seen for exactly what it is, a toy you can play with, but you cannot expect to build anything properly with toys. It sounds to me like you are fed up tinkering with your toys. Now it is time to start reading the docs and doing it properly. It is hard work at first, nothing of value comes without hard work. Time to put the work in, or go back to tinkering with your toys.
Thank you for your replies .I answered all the questions to the best of my knowledge .English is my second language so there could be some mistakes .
I think this is the way for me less ai and start to understand and then after becoming a master then for automation usage ai is alr .
Also I need to work with small pieces but Idk how “I get sleepy when I do things slow” .
I always finish what I started if I had time but game dev is not that kind of job .Its kind of confusing for me .I also know all the work at the first time is tedious but you know some works are not for some people but I want to test myself .any other suggestion except reading and practice ?
I dont think I am ready for game jams bc I can’t build a single mechanic without ai but in future maybe. Oh also I dont eat that much sugar.I just eat until I am full ![]()
